OpenAI’s image-generation tool is software, not a physical accessory. You can use ChatGPT Images to create or edit images in a conversation, or use OpenAI’s APIs to build image generation into an application. For a single prompt and output, OpenAI recommends the Images API; for a multi-turn workflow that can use image inputs and refine results across turns, it recommends the Responses API.
What OpenAI’s image-generation tool does
OpenAI’s image-generation capability creates images from text prompts and can edit existing images. In ChatGPT, you can upload an image and request changes conversationally, or select part of an image for a more localized edit. Developers can request image generation or editing through an API workflow.
These are two ways to use the same general software capability, but they suit different needs: ChatGPT provides a direct interface for people making images, while APIs let developers integrate image generation into their own products and processes.
Choose ChatGPT or an API
| Route | Best suited to | Workflow | Access considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Images | Creating or editing images directly as a ChatGPT user | Describe what you want, review the result, and request conversational or selection-based edits | OpenAI’s Help Center describes the feature as available on web, iOS, and Android and on all tiers. It describes Images with thinking separately for Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability forthcoming when that page was written. Check the page for current availability. |
| Images API | A developer’s one-prompt generation or editing workflow | Send a request to generate or edit an image; customize output settings such as size, quality, format, and compression | API access is subject to model availability, and organization verification may be required for GPT Image models. |
| Responses API | A developer building an interactive or multi-step image experience | Include image inputs where needed, generate an image, then continue refining it across conversation turns | API access is subject to model availability, and organization verification may be required for GPT Image models. |
OpenAI frames the API distinction directly: “If you only need to generate or edit a single image from one prompt, the Image API is your best choice.” For an experience that is “conversational, editable” across turns, its guide recommends the Responses API.

How to use ChatGPT Images
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the iOS or Android app, subject to the feature’s current availability for your account.
- Describe the image you want to create, including the subject, setting, style, and any important composition details.
- For an edit, upload an image or work from a generated image and describe the change. When available, select a region to direct the edit to a particular area.
- Review the result and refine it through follow-up instructions if needed. Specific placement, lettering, or consistency may still require iteration.
OpenAI’s Help Center distinguishes ordinary ChatGPT Images access from Images with thinking, which has separate plan and rollout information. Availability can change, so consult the current Help Center article rather than assuming every mode is included with every account.
How developers choose an API workflow
Use the Images API for a single request
The Images API is the simpler fit when an application needs to generate or edit an image from one prompt and return the result. OpenAI documents generation and editing endpoints and allows developers to customize output size, quality, format, and compression. See the Image generation API guide and the Create image API reference for request details.

Use the Responses API for iteration
Choose the Responses API when the application should support a conversation or multiple steps—for example, generating an image, taking user feedback, and revising it. This route supports image inputs and iterative edits, which makes it better suited to an editable experience than a one-request workflow. OpenAI documents it in the Image generation tool guide.
Model choices and API costs
OpenAI’s current API guide positions GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst for precision-focused editing and GPT Image 2.5 Flare for fast, high-quality everyday generation. Those model names and their availability are subject to change; confirm the live image-generation guide and Flare model documentation before choosing a model for a project.

API image generation has variable costs. The guide lists GPT Image 2 at $0.053 for a 1024×1024 medium-quality output as an illustrative per-image estimate—not a universal quote. Actual usage can vary with dimensions and quality, and text and image inputs can add cost. GPT Image 2.5 also has token rates, so check OpenAI’s live guide and pricing calculator for the model and settings you plan to use.
Limitations to plan for
- Complex requests can be slow: OpenAI says complex prompts may take up to two minutes.
- Text placement can be imperfect: Precise lettering and positioning may not match the prompt exactly.
- Consistency is not guaranteed: Recurring characters and brand elements can vary across images or edits.
- Structured compositions may need iteration: Exact arrangements of elements can be difficult to reproduce reliably.
- Content is filtered: OpenAI says prompts and outputs are filtered according to its content policy.
These limits mean a generated image should not be treated as guaranteed production-ready artwork, especially when exact typography, recurring characters, brand fidelity, or a tightly specified layout matters.

What OpenAI has reported about usage
In its April 23, 2025 API launch announcement, OpenAI reported that more than 130 million users around the world created more than 700 million images in ChatGPT during the first week after image generation was introduced there. These are OpenAI’s historical figures, not an independent measurement or a current usage count. See OpenAI’s announcement.
