Neither Node.js nor PHP is the universal better choice. Node.js is a JavaScript runtime often used to build server-side applications; PHP is a server-side language with its own runtime ecosystem. The real comparison is between the stacks you can build with them—frameworks, hosting, operations, existing code and team skills included.

Node.js may fit teams that want JavaScript on both the client and server or are building I/O-heavy, event-oriented services. PHP remains a capable option for web applications and APIs, especially where a PHP codebase, framework, hosting environment or team experience already provides a good foundation. Age and popularity alone do not determine technical quality.

What are you actually comparing?

Node.js is a runtime that executes JavaScript outside the browser, including on servers. PHP is a programming language commonly executed on a web server, supported by a mature ecosystem of runtimes, frameworks and hosting options. In practical project decisions, developers compare complete backend stacks rather than two equivalent language products.

Framework choice, application architecture, database access, deployment model and team capability can matter as much as the language. For example, a Laravel application and a Node.js service built with a different framework do not become directly comparable simply because both expose an API.

Is PHP outdated compared with Node.js?

No. “Modern” is not a useful single score for comparing the two. Node.js continues to add and stabilize built-in capabilities, while PHP remains in active use and has established frameworks. A more useful question is whether a specific supported version and ecosystem meet your application’s requirements.

Node.js continues to evolve

The Node.js release page, checked September 30, 2026, listed v26 as Current and v24 and v22 as LTS. The project recommends Active LTS or Maintenance LTS releases for production applications, so check the Node.js release schedule when choosing a version; release status changes over time.

Node.js project coverage in 2026 lists features including TypeScript type stripping, the built-in node:test runner, native .env loading, fetch, watch mode, node:sqlite and a stable Permission Model. Their maturity and availability vary by release, so confirm the documentation for the version you intend to deploy.

PHP is still used for new and existing work

Perforce Software’s 2026 PHP Landscape Report announcement describes PHP use in services and APIs, internal business applications and integrated open-source stacks. Its survey is evidence of ongoing use, not a guarantee that PHP is the right choice for every new project.

JetBrains’ 2025 survey of 1,720 developers who identified PHP as their main language reported Laravel use by 64%, WordPress by 25% and Symfony by 23% of respondents. These are survey-specific figures, and categories can overlap; they are not global framework market shares.

How do Node.js and PHP compare for a project?

Decision area Node.js PHP What to evaluate
Workload and concurrency Can suit event-oriented services and workloads with substantial asynchronous I/O. Can serve web applications and APIs; performance depends on the application and deployment. Model the actual request mix, database and external I/O. Test representative load rather than inferring a winner from the runtime design.
Language and team fit JavaScript on both browser and server can reduce language switching for some teams. Existing PHP expertise and code can make PHP the more practical choice. Consider the skills of the team that will build and maintain the system. The cited evidence does not provide a like-for-like comparison of Node.js and PHP hiring markets.
Framework and ecosystem Choose a framework and libraries suited to the application’s architecture and maintenance needs. Laravel, WordPress and Symfony appeared among JetBrains’ PHP respondents; that survey does not establish universal adoption. Compare the specific framework’s features, release practices, dependencies and team familiarity—not ecosystem labels alone.
Deployment and hosting Suitability depends on the target host and operational model. Suitability likewise depends on the target host and operational model. Check the actual platform, runtime support, deployment workflow and operating costs. The cited evidence does not establish a current universal hosting-price comparison.
Support and maintenance The Node.js project recommends Active LTS or Maintenance LTS for production. Verify the PHP version support schedule and plan upgrades. Set an upgrade cadence, monitor dependencies and confirm that the organization can maintain the chosen versions.
Security and compliance Security depends on implementation and operations, not the runtime alone. Security depends on implementation and operations, not the language alone. Assess patching, dependencies, access controls, data handling and applicable compliance obligations for the deployed application.

Which is faster, Node.js or PHP?

The available evidence does not establish a controlled head-to-head benchmark using equivalent application code, frameworks, hardware, database, workload and tuning. It therefore does not support a categorical claim that either is faster.

For a meaningful decision, benchmark the candidate stacks with representative endpoints, data sizes, concurrency and downstream services. Measure latency, throughput, resource use and behavior under expected peak load. Results from one application or configuration should not be generalized to all Node.js or PHP applications.

What does recent PHP usage data tell you?

Perforce Software’s 2026 announcement says its PHP Landscape Report drew responses from over 700 open-source users worldwide, focusing on respondents who use PHP. Among the surveyed PHP users, 80% reported using PHP to build or deploy services or APIs and 70% for internal business applications. The same survey reported relational database integration at 92%, web API integration at 83% and filesystem integration at 70%. These are findings from that survey’s respondents, not a census of every PHP team.

The announcement also says 45% of broader open-source users reported PHP use within their organizations, while 3% of organizations reported plans to retire PHP applications in 2026. These figures use a broader respondent group than the PHP-user findings above and should not be treated as directly comparable market-share measures.

JetBrains’ 2025 survey gives a different snapshot: among 1,720 respondents identifying PHP as their main language, 58% did not plan to migrate to other languages in the next year. It also reported PHP 8.x usage at 89%, PHP 7.x at 33% and PHP 5.6 or earlier at 8%. Respondents could use more than one version, so those figures are not mutually exclusive shares.

What maintenance risks should PHP teams consider?

Continued use does not remove the need to manage staffing and upgrades. Perforce Software’s 2026 announcement reports that more than half of surveyed PHP users had over 15 years of PHP experience, while 15% had five years or less. It also reports that 76% had a version upgrade or migration planned and 68% had completed one in the prior 12 months. The report describes hiring as a concern, but these results do not compare PHP hiring with Node.js hiring.

A 2026 Perforce Zend summary reports that 40% of PHP teams deployed at least one end-of-life PHP version, nearly 20% still used PHP 7.x, and only one in four organizations deploying end-of-life PHP used some third-party long-term support. These survey results make version inventory, supported-version policy and upgrade capacity important operational questions.

Node.js teams also need to maintain supported releases and dependencies; the Node.js project’s production guidance is to use Active LTS or Maintenance LTS. For either stack, establish who owns upgrades, how patches are tested and how quickly a vulnerable dependency can be replaced.

When should you choose Node.js or PHP?

Node.js is a strong candidate when

  • Your team wants to use JavaScript across browser and server code.
  • The service’s architecture benefits from event-oriented handling or asynchronous I/O.
  • Your chosen framework, deployment platform and team experience are a good fit for the project.

PHP is a strong candidate when

  • You already have PHP applications, libraries or experienced maintainers to build on.
  • A PHP framework or existing hosting environment fits the product and operating model.
  • Your organization can keep PHP versions and dependencies supported and can recruit or retain the expertise it needs.

For a new project

Write down the expected workload, framework requirements, hosting constraints, team skills and maintenance plan before selecting a stack. If both options meet those requirements, prototype the riskiest parts—such as a high-volume endpoint, a key integration or a deployment workflow—and compare them under the same conditions. That produces a decision tied to your application rather than to broad claims about age or speed.

Should a PHP developer learn Node.js?

It can be useful if your work involves JavaScript-heavy applications, Node.js services or a team that shares code and practices across browser and server. It is not necessary to abandon PHP simply because another language is available: JetBrains’ 2025 survey found that 58% of its PHP respondents did not plan to migrate to other languages in the next year, while its developer advocate noted that learning additional languages can complement PHP expertise.

The book Node.js for PHP Developers by Daniel Howard was published by O’Reilly in December 2012 and describes recipes for porting PHP code to Node.js. It may offer historical context, but it predates current Node.js releases and should not be relied on as current runtime documentation.
