The Bitmain Antminer S21 XP is the most efficient air-cooled Bitcoin miner in this comparison, at a rated 13.5 joules per terahash (J/TH). The S21 Pro and S21 cost less power per unit of hashrate efficiency only in the sense that their efficiency ratings are higher: 15 and 17.5 J/TH, respectively. All three draw about 3.5–3.65 kW at their listed typical power, so the right choice depends on electricity, hardware cost, cooling and whether your site can support a continuously running ASIC—not just its hashrate.
Which Bitcoin mining rig is best?
For the most efficient air-cooled option among the models with Bitmain specifications here, choose the Antminer S21 XP: Bitmain lists 270 TH/s, 3,645 W and 13.5 J/TH. The S21 Pro is the middle option at 234 TH/s and 15 J/TH, while the S21 is the lower-hashrate baseline at 200 TH/s and 17.5 J/TH. These are typical manufacturer values, not guaranteed results from a particular machine in operation.
There is no single proven winner for profitability. A more efficient miner can use less electricity per unit of hash, but whether it earns more than it costs depends on the purchase and shipping price, your electricity rate, uptime, pool fees, cooling and other facility costs, as well as network economics. The listed specifications alone cannot establish a current return on investment.
Bitmain S21-family specifications compared
| Model | Listed hashrate | Listed power | Efficiency | Cooling and constraints | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antminer S21 | 200 TH/s | 3,500 W | 17.5 J/TH | Air-cooled; 220–277 V AC; 0–45 °C listed operating temperature | Baseline option when acquisition cost is a priority |
| Antminer S21 Pro | 234 TH/s | 3,510 W | 15 J/TH | Air-cooled; 220–277 V AC; up to 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions | Middle ground in hashrate and efficiency |
| Antminer S21 XP | 270 TH/s | 3,645 W | 13.5 J/TH | Air-cooled; 220–277 V AC; up to 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions | Best documented air-cooled efficiency in this comparison |
Bitmain lists the S21-family input requirement as 220–277 V AC and 20 A. The figures in the table are manufacturer-listed typical values from Bitmain’s S21, S21 Pro and S21 XP specifications, which were updated in 2024. For the S21 XP, Bitmain says hashrate can fluctuate by ±3% and power and efficiency by ±5%; those tolerances matter when comparing a specific unit or estimating its energy use.

Efficiency is expressed in joules per terahash. Lower J/TH means less listed energy use for each unit of hashing work; it does not by itself mean lower total power use, since the XP’s listed 3,645 W exceeds the S21 and S21 Pro figures. The three air-cooled models produce 200–270 TH/s while drawing roughly 3.5–3.65 kW at their listed typical power.
What about the S21 XP+ Hyd?
The Antminer S21 XP+ Hyd is a liquid-cooled option aimed at professional or hosted deployments rather than a straightforward home setup. TechRadar’s buyer guide, last updated 3 December 2025, lists it at 500 TH/s and 5,500 W, describes it as relatively power-efficient, and says it uses a liquid-cooling system. TechRadar also notes an approximately 400 V industrial connection may limit home installation. These figures are from TechRadar, not the Bitmain specification rows above; a comparable J/TH value is not stated in the cited guide.

Liquid cooling may suit a facility designed to supply and manage the required cooling and electrical infrastructure. It is not simply a quieter drop-in replacement for an air-cooled miner: the site must be equipped for the machine’s connection and cooling requirements. For a buyer without those facilities, an established hosting provider may be more practical than adapting a residence.
Can you run an Antminer at home?
Possibly, but the listed voltage, current and continuous power draw put these machines well beyond ordinary low-power consumer electronics. A miner running at its typical listed power for 24 hours would use about 84 kWh per day for the S21, 84.24 kWh for the S21 Pro and 87.48 kWh for the S21 XP. These are arithmetic estimates based on the manufacturer’s typical wattage multiplied by 24 hours; they assume uninterrupted operation at that power and do not account for real-world variation or additional cooling equipment.

Before buying, have a qualified electrician verify that the service, circuit, wiring and protection are suitable for the unit and its continuous load. Do not assume that a household outlet or an existing circuit can support it just because a plug can be adapted. If the electrical supply is not appropriate, use a qualified hosting facility instead of improvising a connection.
Plan for heat and noise
Nearly all electrical power consumed by a miner ultimately becomes heat that must be removed from the space. At 3.5–3.65 kW per air-cooled unit, ventilation and heat rejection are core operating requirements, not optional comfort upgrades. A machine can overheat or throttle if hot exhaust recirculates into its intake or if the room cannot move the heat away.

Bitmain lists the S21 Pro and S21 XP at up to 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions. That level makes placement in a living area or near neighbors a serious noise consideration. Bitmain’s S21 figures cited here do not state a noise value, so do not assume it is quieter based on the table.
How to choose the right rig for your situation
- Check site capability first. Confirm the available electrical service, voltage, circuit capacity, ventilation, heat handling and noise constraints for the specific model. Resolve these before paying for hardware.
- Compare total operating cost, not only J/TH. Include the miner and shipping, electricity, pool fees, downtime, repairs, cooling, facility rent and likely resale value. A more efficient model may cost more to acquire; the cited specifications do not establish whether the difference will pay back.
- Decide between air cooling and hosted liquid cooling. Air-cooled S21 models avoid a liquid-cooling setup but still need substantial airflow and heat removal. The S21 XP+ Hyd is suited to a deployment with industrial electrical capacity and liquid-cooling infrastructure, or hosting that provides them.
- Check actual terms and availability before purchase. The available specifications do not establish live prices, inventory, seller authenticity or hosting terms. Verify those directly with the manufacturer, a reputable seller or a hosting provider before making a commitment.
Bitcoin ASICs versus gaming PCs
Bitcoin mining at competitive scale uses SHA-256 application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), such as the S21-family machines. They are built for that mining workload and cannot readily be repurposed for unrelated algorithms. A GPU or CPU system is more flexible for other computing or mining tasks, but it is not a like-for-like substitute for a purpose-built Bitcoin ASIC when the goal is Bitcoin SHA-256 hashing. TechRadar’s 2025 guide describes ASICs as having strong ROI potential while requiring significant capital; that is a general possibility, not a profitability guarantee for a particular rig or location.

What the specifications cannot tell you
Hashrate and efficiency help compare machines, but they do not answer whether mining will be profitable for you. That requires current, location-specific inputs—including electricity price, hardware cost, expected uptime, pool fees and network conditions. No reproducible location-specific profitability calculation or current Bitcoin price and difficulty analysis is established by the cited sources, so a universal ROI winner cannot be named from these specifications.
