Automatic halogen injections refreshed the gas during the test, which ran from December 28, 1999, to January 4, 2000.
What the 625-million-pulse result measured
The figure describes pulses achieved from a single gas fill during a controlled endurance run—not the total lifetime of the laser hardware, nor a claim that the laser operated without any gas maintenance. The system used automatic halogen injections to refresh the gas as it ran.
EE Times reported the result on February 29, 2000, following Lambda Physik’s test. At 1 kHz, 625 million pulses correspond to about 173 hours of pulsing if the system runs continuously at that rate. The reported test lasted from December 28, 1999, to January 4, 2000; the source does not specify that the laser pulsed continuously throughout every hour of that period. EE Times’ report
What was the NovaLine F1020?
The NovaLine F1020 was a 157 nm fluorine (F2) excimer laser designed for semiconductor lithography. The reported operating specifications were 10 W output power, a 1 kHz repetition rate and approximately 1 picometer bandwidth. Lambda Physik intended it to be combined with high-numerical-aperture, high-throughput scanner systems.

These specifications describe a specialized industrial laser for lithography, not a consumer laser. The pulse-lifetime result matters in that context because gas performance is one of the operating dimensions relevant to a laser integrated into a scanner system.
How Lambda Physik said it extended fluorine-laser gas life
Lambda Physik attributed the improvement to technology advances that included its DuraTube metal-and-ceramic laser-tube design, based on NovaTube technology. The report does not isolate the contribution of the tube design from other improvements, so the 625-million-pulse result should be understood as a system-level demonstration rather than a quantified test of one component alone.

The result marked a substantial change from the industry context described in the report: F2 excimer-laser gas lifetimes had been below one million pulses five years earlier. Lambda Physik presented the new performance as bringing fluorine-laser gas life closer to that of krypton-fluoride (KrF) and argon-fluoride (ArF) excimer lasers used in lithography.

A longer interval of useful pulsing from a gas fill can make an industrial laser more practical to operate, but this report establishes a specific endurance result—not scanner uptime, maintenance savings, production yield, or a direct comparison under identical conditions with KrF or ArF systems. It demonstrates that the F1020 reached 625 million pulses under the stated test conditions while receiving automatic halogen injections.
