Genetec’s State of Physical Security 2026 reports that respondents experienced an increase in physical and/or cybersecurity incidents in 2025—but that combined finding does not establish that physical-only incidents rose, or that connecting security systems caused the increase.
What the reported increase does—and does not—mean
Genetec’s State of Physical Security 2026 describes an increase in physical and/or cybersecurity incidents experienced by respondents in 2025. The report text available for this finding does not expose its percentage, so no figure can be reliably quoted here. The result combines incident categories: it is not evidence that physical incidents alone increased, nor an independently audited count of incidents across organizations.
The distinction matters for security planning. A physical incident might involve unauthorized entry or damage to a facility. A cyber incident might target credentials, networks, or connected devices used in physical security. A combined survey result can capture either category, but does not show how much each contributed or establish that one caused the other.
Why physical security now affects IT risk
Cameras, access-control systems, and related infrastructure can connect to enterprise networks and move or store data. That creates operational dependencies between teams: IT security decisions about network access, identity, software maintenance, and storage can affect physical-security systems, while those systems can introduce assets and data flows that IT needs to account for.

Genetec’s 2026 report lists phishing or smishing, malware, device hacking for network access, compromised credentials, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and ransomware among reported cybersecurity incident types. These are cybersecurity incidents, not physical incidents. Their relevance to physical security is that connected systems and shared enterprise environments may place physical-security operations within the broader cyber-risk picture.
How organizations are responding
Genetec’s 2026 report identifies several reported approaches to security: employee cybersecurity education, tuning permissions and privileges, hardening infrastructure, securing data storage, and protecting against unauthorized access. The figure allows multiple responses, so the approaches are not mutually exclusive and should not be read as a ranked list of one-choice alternatives.

- Educate employees: Address cybersecurity awareness as part of organizational practice, including risks such as phishing and smishing.
- Review permissions and privileges: Ensure access is appropriate to each person’s role and operational responsibilities.
- Harden infrastructure: Treat physical-security systems as infrastructure that requires security attention, rather than as isolated equipment.
- Protect stored data: Include data storage in security planning for systems that collect or retain information.
- Prevent unauthorized access: Coordinate protections for both systems and the people who administer or use them.
The report also describes varied deployment preferences. It does not establish that cloud, hybrid, or another approach is universally safest; organizations need to evaluate deployment choices against their operational needs and security requirements.
What survey results say about IT and physical-security coordination
Genetec’s 2025 State of Physical Security report found that 77% of end users said their physical security and IT departments worked collaboratively. More than 50% of end users, systems integrators, and consultants reported IT involvement in physical-security purchasing decisions. The survey analyzed 5,696 responses collected from August 12 to September 15, 2024. These are respondent reports, not independently verified measures of collaboration across all organizations.

The Security Industry Association frames convergence as more than joining technologies: it also means coordinating physical security, cybersecurity, and information-security strategies. Its Security Convergence 2024 resources include hardening guides, onboarding recommendations, training, and a cybersecurity credential focused on physical security.
How to reduce the organizational gap
- Bring the teams together early. Involve IT security and physical security in purchasing, onboarding, and changes to connected systems—not only after a problem occurs.
- Make responsibilities clear. Coordinate who handles permissions, infrastructure hardening, data storage, and protection against unauthorized access.
- Include physical-security systems in cyber planning. Consider connected cameras, access-control systems, and their data flows when reviewing the organization’s security posture.
- Choose deployment based on operational needs. Assess the organization’s requirements rather than assuming a single cloud, hybrid, or other architecture is the safest fit.
- Use convergence-specific guidance and training. SIA’s resources provide material for organizations working to align physical security with cybersecurity and information security.
What earlier Genetec surveys add
In Genetec’s 2024 report, 31% of end users said their organization had been targeted by cybercriminals in 2023. The same report said 42% of organizations increased cybersecurity-related tool deployments in physical-security environments in 2023, compared with 29% in 2022. These historical survey figures describe respondents’ reports for the stated years; they are not a current physical-only incident series.
