There are documented cases of people using Omegle to groom or deceive users, secretly record sexual material, and threaten to share it. But the available case records do not establish that bots carried out those incidents or how often bots were involved. Omegle shut down in November 2023; the risks described here are historical examples of exploitation that can also arise in online stranger-chat settings.
What happened in documented Omegle cases?
Official case records describe several forms of exploitation, not a verified, coordinated bot scheme. In one case account, a defendant used Omegle and Snapchat to groom and threaten a minor. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana described the allegations in its FBI and Partners Issue National Public Safety Alert on Sextortion Schemes release.
The FBI also reported historical allegations involving fake webcam software, secret recording, and threats on Omegle and other anonymous video-chat sites. These details come from an investigation and should be understood as allegations in that case, not proof that every Omegle recording—or any particular current report—was made secretly or by a bot. See the FBI’s Formal Charges, New Allegations Announced After Investigation of Indiana Man in Sextortion Scheme.
A later prosecution shows that cases involving the service can continue after its closure: on 29 January 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced a 12-year sentence in a case involving historical communications through Omegle, Skype, and Instagram. That release is titled Brooklyn Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Coercion and Enticement of Minors.

How sextortion can begin and escalate
Sextortion is a form of coercion in which someone threatens to expose sexual images or recordings unless the target sends money, more images, or engages in sexual activity. An interaction can appear ordinary at first; an offender may use deception or a video call to capture material and then make threats. The FBI’s guidance on Sextortion and Financially Motivated Sextortion describes these tactics.
The reviewed cases and FBI guidance establish that these tactics occur; they do not establish that bots were responsible for the incidents implied by the original claim, how common bot use is, or whether a specific recording in a current report was made without the person’s knowledge. Avoid treating an automated scam as proven simply because an interaction seemed scripted or suspicious.

Omegle is closed
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recorded Omegle’s shutdown in November 2023. Its 10 November 2023 Statement on video chat service Omegle shutting down also reported figures from Omegle’s response to a legal notice: three video-chat moderators, one text moderator, and as many as 40,000 simultaneous users. Those were figures attributed to Omegle, not an independent audit or a measure of how many users were at risk.
The Commissioner said, “There should be no spaces anywhere where such crimes are freely allowed to occur, including online.” The cases remain relevant as examples of exploitation in stranger-chat environments, but they should not be presented as evidence that Omegle is still operating.

What do I do if this is happening to me?
- Tell someone you trust. Contact a trusted adult, family member, or other supportive person. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
- Do not send more material or money. Paying does not guarantee that threats will stop; the FBI warns that images may still be distributed after payment. The FBI states, “Cooperating with the predator rarely stops the blackmail and harassment—but law enforcement can.” This is guidance to seek help, not a promise about what investigators can achieve.
- Keep useful evidence if it is safe. Save account names, messages, payment demands, and relevant links. Do not put yourself at risk to gather evidence or forward explicit images, especially images involving a minor.
- Report the threats. Contact local law enforcement. In the United States, you can also report to the FBI; if a minor is involved, the FBI guidance points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
- Use image-removal resources where applicable. The FBI points to Take It Down for intimate images taken when the person was under 18 and StopNCII for adults. These services do not guarantee removal of every copy from every place.
- Be wary of paid rescue offers. The FBI warns that people or companies offering paid sextortion help or image removal may be trying to victimize you again. You should not have to pay someone to seek help or report a threat.
You are not to blame for someone else’s threats or deception. If the person targeted is a minor, involve a trusted adult and appropriate authorities; avoid sharing or reposting the material.
How can I help someone else who is in this situation?
- Listen without blaming them, and help them contact a trusted adult, law enforcement, or the FBI.
- Offer to help preserve messages and account details safely, and make a report with them if they want support.
- Do not ask them to send you intimate material, share it, or confront the person making threats.
- If a minor is involved, take the situation seriously and help connect them with an appropriate adult and reporting channel.
Reduce webcam exposure in future chats
The FBI advises turning devices and webcams off when they are not in use. A physical webcam cover can provide an extra barrier when a camera is idle, but it cannot prevent recording during an active call, stop someone from making threats, or substitute for leaving an unsafe interaction and getting help.
