A passkey is a password replacement that lets a website verify your sign-in with a cryptographic credential stored on or made available to your device. You unlock it with a fingerprint, face scan, PIN, or device password; the site does not receive your biometric or a reusable secret. Passkeys are designed to make phishing and password reuse harder, but you should still keep account recovery options available.

What is a passkey?

A passkey is a FIDO credential made from a pair of cryptographic keys. When you create one, your device or passkey provider creates a private key and a matching public key. The service stores the public key, while your authenticator holds or accesses the private key.

At sign-in, the service sends a challenge. After you verify locally—using a fingerprint, face scan, PIN, or device password—the authenticator signs that challenge with the private key. The service checks the signature using the public key. The private key is not sent to the site as a reusable secret. Websites use WebAuthn, with CTAP supporting communication between an authenticator and another device. FIDO Alliance and Microsoft Learn explain the standards and flow.

Your fingerprint or PIN is not the passkey: it is a local way to unlock the authenticator. Microsoft says biometric information used for Windows passkey authentication remains on the device.

Why is my phone asking me to create a passkey?

The service is offering a way to sign in without typing a password. Once created, a passkey can usually be selected at sign-in and unlocked on your phone. Depending on the service and setup, you may also be able to use it from another device—for example, by approving a sign-in on a nearby phone. FIDO describes a cross-device flow that uses Bluetooth Low Energy to verify physical proximity; the passkey is not simply copied onto the borrowed computer.

Are passkeys safer than passwords?

Passkeys are designed to be tied to the specific website or app for which they were created. A lookalike site should not be able to solicit and reuse the legitimate site’s passkey in the way it can capture a typed password. That reduces reliance on spotting a fake domain, and it helps avoid the risks of reusing passwords or a service storing a shared password that could be exposed in a database breach.

The FIDO Alliance puts it this way: “Unlike passwords, passkeys are phishing-resistant, are always strong, and are designed so that there are no shared secrets.” These protections do not make an account invulnerable. A service’s other sign-in and recovery options, its implementation, and its security policies still matter.

Synced or device-bound: what is the difference?

Passkeys can be stored in different ways. Microsoft documentation gives Apple iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager as examples of passkey providers. Whether a particular service supports a given provider or credential type depends on the service and setup.

Type Where it is available Trade-off
Synced passkey Made available across devices connected to the same passkey-provider account. Convenient on multiple devices and potentially easier to restore on a replacement device. You rely on access to the provider account and on the service supporting the setup.
Device-bound passkey Stays on one device or a hardware security key rather than syncing to other devices. Offers a tighter device boundary and may support device provenance or attestation where available. You may need a separate backup credential or the service’s recovery process if the device is lost.

Both types retain the FIDO phishing-resistance design. For most people, syncing is convenient; an organization may require device-bound credentials for greater control over where credentials reside. Neither is the best choice for everyone: weigh device access and recovery against device-bound control, provider-account dependence, and any workplace or service requirements. FIDO Alliance and Microsoft Learn describe these options.

What happens if I lose my phone?

The answer depends on where the passkey is stored and what recovery options the service provides. A synced passkey may be available on a replacement device after you restore access to the provider account. A device-bound passkey may require another registered passkey, a backup security key, or the website’s account-recovery process.

Before relying on a passkey as your only way into an important account, check the service’s recovery options. Keep existing recovery methods current and, if the service allows it, register a backup credential. Adding a passkey to a Google Account does not remove its existing authentication or recovery factors, according to Google Account Help. Apple also explains passkey security and synchronization in its passkey security guidance.

Do I need to buy a security key?

No. You can use passkeys on supported phones, computers, and passkey-provider accounts without buying a separate product. A FIDO2 security key is an optional physical authenticator: it can hold a device-bound passkey and may serve as a backup sign-in credential. Before buying one, check that the account or service supports security-key passkeys and that the key’s connector or wireless option works with your devices. Microsoft identifies physical keys as an option for some regulated or elevated-privilege users, while noting that lost keys can create recovery and support costs.

Will passkeys work on my device?

Passkeys are supported across major operating systems, browsers, and third-party providers, but the exact experience depends on the service, device, browser, provider, and—on work or school accounts—administrator settings. Requirements are not universal across services.

For Microsoft personal accounts, its support page lists Windows 10 and newer, macOS Ventura and newer, ChromeOS 109 and newer, iOS 16 and newer, and Android 9 and newer, alongside browser-version requirements. Treat those as Microsoft-specific requirements, not minimums for passkeys generally. Check the service’s current support information if a passkey option is missing or setup fails: Microsoft Support’s passkey overview and Microsoft’s Windows passkey support page provide service-specific details.
