Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 “Gigi” is Linux Mint’s Debian-based edition, with Cinnamon as its desktop. Released on October 14, 2025, it uses Debian 13 “Trixie” instead of Ubuntu while aiming to keep the familiar Linux Mint experience. The project says LMDE also helps ensure Mint’s software works outside Ubuntu.
What is Linux Mint Debian Edition?
LMDE stands for Linux Mint Debian Edition. It is Linux Mint built on Debian rather than Ubuntu. The Mint team describes its goal as keeping the experience as similar as possible to Linux Mint while using Debian for the package base. That makes the distinction primarily about the underlying distribution—not a claim that LMDE is faster, more stable, or better supported on particular hardware.
LMDE 7, codenamed “Gigi,” is based on Debian 13 “Trixie.” Linux Mint identifies it as an LTS release, but its release material does not give an exact support end date. Linux Mint’s LMDE 7 announcement and release notes provide the release details.

The LMDE 7 Cinnamon download page lists a 3 GB ISO and offers direct and torrent downloads. Use the official page or one of its listed mirrors, then follow Linux Mint’s linked instructions to verify the image’s integrity and authenticity. Mint specifically recommends verification because counterfeit images can be created.
A USB flash drive is one way to make removable installation media. The download page does not specify a minimum drive capacity or recommend a particular brand.

How to upgrade LMDE 6 to LMDE 7
Linux Mint documents an in-place upgrade using its mintupgrade tool. This is a major upgrade and may take several hours. Before starting, make sure LMDE 6 is up to date and prepare system snapshots as the project advises. A separate copy of personal files is an optional additional precaution; it is not the same thing as a system snapshot.
- Open a terminal and refresh package information:
apt update. - Install the upgrade tool:
apt install mintupgrade. - Start the upgrade:
sudo mintupgrade. - Follow the prompts shown by the tool and allow the process to finish. Linux Mint notes that temporary files are left behind and points to section 5.1.6 of the Debian 13 release notes.
- After a successful upgrade, remove the tool with
sudo apt remove mintupgrade, then reboot.
These commands and the project’s full guidance are on the Linux Mint LMDE 7 upgrade page. The documented path does not apply to 32-bit LMDE 6 installations: LMDE 7 is 64-bit only, and Linux Mint says 32-bit systems cannot be upgraded to it.

Installation details and release-specific caveats
LMDE 7’s release notes call out several behaviors that matter during installation or recovery:
- Manual partitioning and swap: In manual partitioning mode, the installer automounts all swap partitions and adds them to
/etc/fstab. - Existing LVM partitions: Before installing on an existing LVM partition, remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs.
- Root account: The root account is locked by default. If a root password is needed for recovery-console or root-login use, the notes give
sudo passwd root. - VirtualBox features: For shared folders, drag and drop, proper acceleration, and display resolution, use VirtualBox’s Devices menu to insert the Guest Additions CD image and follow its instructions.
- Live session: The live-session username is
mintand its password is empty.
Consult the LMDE 7 release notes before changing partitions or troubleshooting a virtual machine.

Is there an LMDE 7 MATE edition?
The release information cited here establishes LMDE 7 Cinnamon. It does not announce a MATE edition or establish whether one is planned, so a future MATE release should not be assumed.
