ChromeOS 117 is a staged Stable-channel update led by a Material 3-inspired visual refresh: themes draw on your wallpaper and style, while the Personalization App lets you adjust the look. Google announced the rollout on September 27, 2023, but said users should soon see the update—not that every Chromebook would receive it at once.
What changed in ChromeOS 117’s appearance?
Google’s Chrome 117 Enterprise and Education release notes describe Google Material 3 as the design platform behind the refresh. The update adds themes that dynamically reflect a user’s wallpaper and style, alongside updated text, menus, icons, and other system surfaces. Accent colors match the wallpaper and adapt to light and dark modes.
The Personalization App provides controls for the new look. “Material You” is a familiar shorthand for wallpaper-based personalization, but Google calls the design platform Google Material 3 in its release notes.
What other features does ChromeOS 117 add?
Productivity and everyday tools
- Camera timelapse: The built-in Camera app can record timelapse videos.
- Calendar meeting access: A calendar view includes a direct Join button for meetings.
- Launcher system answers: Search can show cards with information such as the OS version and device status.
- Clipboard and Emoji Picker: Clipboard history is enhanced, and Emoji Picker adds GIF support.
Accessibility and battery management
- Color correction: Controls cover protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia, and grayscale, with a slider for adjusting filter intensity.
- Adaptive charging: The release notes list adaptive charging among the update’s additions.
Bluetooth transition
ChromeOS 117 begins a gradual transition to Android’s Fluoride Bluetooth stack. Google says the migration preserves paired devices and is being applied gradually across ChromeOS devices.

When will ChromeOS 117 reach your Chromebook?
Google’s Stable-channel announcement, dated September 27, 2023, said users should soon see the update on their devices. That is a staged rollout, not a promise of a simultaneous release to every Chromebook. Timing can therefore vary by device.
Does ChromeOS 117 change how long a Chromebook gets updates?
No. ChromeOS 117 is a software release, while update eligibility is tied to the Chromebook model and Google’s separate update policy. In a 2023 announcement, Google said Chromebooks released from 2021 onward would receive 10 years of automatic updates beginning in 2024. That policy statement is lifecycle context, not proof that a particular device qualifies; check the exact model’s support information.
