AWS’s re:Invent 2024 storage announcements addressed different stages of working with data: organizing analytics tables, finding S3 objects, serving file and GPU workloads, transferring large datasets, and setting copy or integrity controls. They were separate capabilities—not one unified AI storage platform—and each suits a different data shape or operational need.

What AWS announced—and which workloads each feature targets

The announcements span object, table, file, and block storage. The right comparison is by workload and access pattern, not by ranking every feature on one performance scale. AWS’s re:Invent 2024 roundup covered several of these capabilities; the more specific announcements describe their intended roles.

Amazon S3 Tables: managed Apache Iceberg tables for analytics

AWS introduced S3 Tables as storage optimized for analytics data organized in Apache Iceberg tables. That makes it a more targeted choice than general-purpose object storage for tabular data such as transactions or sensor readings. AWS described integrations with analytics services including Athena, EMR, Redshift, and Spark in its announcement-era material; check current AWS documentation for the latest integration and availability details.

AWS said S3 Tables continually maintains tables to help optimize query efficiency and storage costs. It also claimed up to 3 times faster query throughput and up to 10 times higher transactions per second compared with self-managed tables. These are AWS-published comparisons from its 2024 announcement, not independent benchmark results. AWS’s S3 Tables announcement explains the service’s design and claims.

S3 Metadata: queryable information about objects

AWS described S3 Metadata as a way to automatically capture object details and expose them through read-only, queryable tables. The announcement-era description includes system-defined information, such as object size and source, as well as custom annotations, with updates described as near real time. AWS said the metadata tables are stored in S3 Tables.

AWS also described integration with Amazon Bedrock for annotations such as a video’s origin, creation time, and model. That can help discovery workflows, but metadata is not itself a foundation model or a replacement for data governance. See AWS’s S3 Metadata announcement for the original description.

FSx for OpenZFS Intelligent-Tiering: file data across access tiers

AWS announced Intelligent-Tiering for FSx for OpenZFS to move data among frequently accessed, infrequently accessed, and archival tiers. AWS stated maxima of 400,000 IOPS and 20 GB/s throughput; these are maximum figures, not expected results for every file system or workload. When evaluating the feature, consider access patterns, latency requirements, capacity, and the operational cost of tiering. The AWS News Blog roundup describes the announcement.

FSx for Lustre: higher-throughput paths to GPUs

AWS announced Elastic Fabric Adapter and NVIDIA GPUDirect Storage support for FSx for Lustre, describing the change as enabling up to 12 times higher throughput to GPUs. AWS presented this as a maximum for relevant workloads, not a guaranteed gain. It is aimed at GPU-heavy data pipelines, including machine-learning training, where data delivery can affect how effectively accelerators are used. The AWS News Blog archive reports the announcement.

Moving, accessing, and protecting data

Data Transfer Terminals: physical locations for bulk uploads

AWS announced Data Transfer Terminals as physical locations where customers can upload large datasets to AWS. This addresses bulk data movement; it is distinct from a storage tier or a tool for browsing objects. The 2024 roundup describes the announcement, but does not establish current location coverage or availability. Check AWS’s current service information before planning a transfer.

Storage Browser for Amazon S3: an embeddable interface

AWS announced Storage Browser for Amazon S3 as an open-source interface component developers can embed in applications. With authorization, users can browse, upload, download, copy, or delete S3 objects. It provides a user-facing access layer; it does not replace the application’s authorization and governance decisions. See the AWS roundup for the announcement-era description.

Default integrity protections for new S3 objects

AWS also announced default data-integrity protections for new S3 objects. This is an object-upload integrity change, separate from discovery through S3 Metadata or application access through Storage Browser. The roundup establishes the announcement, but not every current implementation detail; consult AWS documentation for the behavior applicable to a particular workflow.

Time-based EBS snapshot and AMI copy completion

AWS announced configurable completion durations for copying EBS snapshots and AMIs, from 15 minutes to 48 hours. The setting helps administrators plan copy operations around operational windows and recovery objectives; it does not by itself guarantee a particular recovery outcome. The AWS News Blog archive describes the timing option.

How to choose among the announcements

Start with the workload rather than a headline performance figure. These announcements cover materially different needs, so compare like with like:

  • Analytics tables: Consider S3 Tables when data is organized as Apache Iceberg tables and the goal is analytics.
  • Object discovery: Consider S3 Metadata when automatically queryable object attributes and annotations would help users or processes locate data.
  • File workloads: Evaluate FSx for OpenZFS Intelligent-Tiering against access frequency, latency, and tiering requirements; assess FSx for Lustre when GPU data throughput is a key concern.
  • Bulk ingestion: Data Transfer Terminals address physically moving large datasets into AWS, rather than day-to-day application access.
  • Application access: Storage Browser offers an embeddable route for authorized users to work with S3 objects.
  • Copy planning: Time-based EBS snapshot and AMI copies concern completion timing; align the configuration with operations windows and recovery objectives.

For each option, verify current regional availability, pricing, quotas, integrations, and configuration limits in AWS documentation. The announcement-era material from November and December 2024 does not establish whether every capability remains in the same preview or general-availability state in 2026.
