Virtual screens can add workspace to a laptop or mobile setup, but the evidence does not show that today’s display glasses broadly outperform a good physical multi-monitor desk. The headline’s four-monitor replacement was a 2016 Meta demonstration reported by Futurism—not a controlled productivity test or proof that the same glasses are available today.

What the four-monitor demonstration showed

In a March 1, 2016 report, Futurism described a Meta engineer using augmented-reality glasses while working on a 3D design, running Spotify, and checking email across several virtual screens. The engineer said he had replaced four desktop monitors. It was a striking demonstration of the idea, but it did not measure productivity against physical monitors or establish how well the setup would work over sustained daily use.

Futurism also attributed remarks to Meta CEO Meron Gribetz about the glasses having the resolution and components to begin replacing monitors, and quoted the engineer saying, “I code for the glasses through the glasses.” These lines are attributable to Futurism’s report; they should not be treated as independently verified transcripts. What productivity studies found

The 2021 HoloLens 2 study

A 2021 IEEE VR study by Leonardo Pavanatto and colleagues compared physical, virtual, and hybrid monitor arrangements using a Microsoft HoloLens 2 prototype and productivity tasks. Participants completed tasks in every arrangement, but virtual-only work took somewhat longer than physical-monitor work and involved more head movement. Under the conditions tested, the authors saw more potential in combining virtual and physical monitors than in replacing physical screens entirely. Those findings apply to the prototype and tasks in that study, not to every current display-glasses product or every kind of work. See the IEEE VR 2021 study.

The 2023 comparison

A later peer-reviewed study compared a three-monitor physical workstation, a laptop with virtual desktops, and a custom head-worn setup displaying three virtual monitors. Participants rated the virtual approach faster, easier, and more intuitive than the laptop condition; the physical workstation still had the highest user-experience rating. The researchers used a custom prototype that was not commercially available, so the results are not a direct test of current consumer glasses.

For context, the study’s physical arrangement used three 24-inch, 1920 × 1080 monitors positioned 70 cm from participants. Its virtual arrangement used three 28.8-inch virtual monitors at 1920 × 1080 each. These are the study’s setup details, not a specification comparison between retail products. Read the 2023 study.

How current display glasses feel in extended use

A September 2026 Tom’s Guide hands-on account described a week-long trial involving RayNeo Air 4 Pro and VITURE Pro 2 display glasses, with XREAL glasses briefly used for comparison. The reviewer reported that prolonged wear became tiring and that switching to desk activities such as writing in a notebook felt awkward. These are one reviewer’s observations, not clinical findings or a prediction of every wearer’s experience. Read the hands-on account.

When virtual screens may make sense

Head-worn displays are most compelling when portability or limited desk space matters: they can offer additional screen surfaces without requiring a row of physical monitors. They may also be worth considering if a laptop’s single display feels restrictive. The studies cited here support feasibility, particularly relative to a laptop-only arrangement, but do not establish a general performance advantage over a physical multi-monitor workstation.

A hybrid setup is a reasonable option to consider if you want portable extra displays but still prefer a physical screen for your main work. Microsoft Research’s Mt. Rogers project describes research goals around portable head-worn productivity displays, including readability, input, and comfort; it is a research project, not a retail product. See Microsoft Research’s Mt. Rogers project.

What to check before relying on glasses as your workspace

  • Text readability: Try the kind of documents, code, or design work you actually do. A screen that looks impressive for a short demo may not suit long reading sessions.
  • Comfort and fit: Assess how the glasses feel for the session length you expect, rather than judging only a brief trial.
  • Screen arrangement: Confirm how many independently placed screens the specific product and its software support.
  • Compatibility and connection: Check that the glasses work with your computer or phone and that the connection method fits your setup.
  • Desk interaction: Consider whether you need to look down at a keyboard, notebook, or other physical objects often; head-worn displays can make shifting between virtual and physical work less convenient.
  • Portability and privacy: Weigh the benefit of carrying a virtual workspace against the ease of using and sharing a physical desk setup.
  • Hybrid use: Decide whether keeping a physical main display would make the arrangement more practical for your routine.

“Virtual display” can mean two different things

In the headline story, virtual screens are visual displays presented through AR glasses. The phrase can also mean software-created screens for a remote computer, including screens that exist without physical monitors attached to the host. Jump Desktop documents that software use; it is distinct from wearing display glasses. See Jump Desktop’s virtual-display documentation.
