On the web, sign in, go to Settings → Close your account under Account options, then choose Close Account. Withdraw any remaining balance and resolve limitations or other open issues first. Closing an account is not the same as immediately erasing all personal data, and PayPal says a closed account cannot be reopened.
The instructions below reflect PayPal’s UK help guidance; labels and privacy rules can differ by country. PayPal’s UK Help Center is the source for the web route and closure blockers.
How do I close my PayPal account?
- Sign in to PayPal in a web browser and open Settings.
- Under Account options, select Close your account.
- Choose Close Account and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.
These are the labels in PayPal’s UK help instructions. The menu wording or location may vary by country or interface version. A US help result also describes an app route through the profile icon and Close your account; if you do not see the same controls, use the help center for your country.
What should I do before closing it?
Withdraw your balance and clear account issues
PayPal says you cannot close an account while it has a remaining balance, a limitation, or another unresolved issue. Withdraw the balance and resolve the issue with PayPal before trying again. If you suspect an unauthorized transaction, report it promptly through the Resolution Center before closing the account.

Check payments and save any records you need
Review recent activity and save statements or other records you may need later. Check active and scheduled payments as well. PayPal’s UK-locale User Agreement says scheduled or incomplete transactions are cancelled when an account is closed, but a merchant subscription may be governed by a separate arrangement. Check the merchant’s own cancellation controls rather than assuming closing PayPal cancels every subscription.
Can I reopen my PayPal account?
No. PayPal says a closed account cannot be reopened. If you may need PayPal again, consider whether you are ready to close the account before confirming; do not expect to restore the same account afterward.

Why can’t I close my PayPal account?
PayPal identifies a remaining balance, an account limitation, or another unresolved issue as reasons closure may be blocked. Check for those conditions, withdraw available funds, and work with PayPal to resolve the issue. If the problem concerns an unauthorized payment, report it in the Resolution Center before attempting closure.

Not immediately or necessarily in full. PayPal says it may retain personal information to meet financial, legal, regulatory, fraud-prevention, collection, dispute, investigation, and other permitted purposes. It may erase data after applicable retention requirements end if there is no other legal reason to keep it. The rules and retention periods vary by jurisdiction and circumstance.

For the United States, PayPal’s Privacy Statement says information used for the ongoing relationship is stored for the relationship plus 10 years, subject to applicable legal requirements and exceptions. That is a US policy statement, not a universal PayPal retention period. PayPal’s US Privacy Center also says people who have closed an account can still use its privacy portal to request a copy of their data. Use the privacy options and contact route for your own country to learn what rights and request processes apply.
