Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (SBS 2003 R2) was a Microsoft server suite for small businesses, released in Standard and Premium editions. Its extended support ended on April 13, 2016, so it is now a legacy product—not a supported choice for a new or internet-facing server. If you have inherited an installation, the key questions are what R2 added, which edition is present, and where to find historical documentation.
What is Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2?
SBS 2003 R2 was Microsoft’s “release 2 (R2) update to SBS 2003,” as Guy Haycock, then an SBS Senior Product Manager, described it in a December 6, 2005 post. Microsoft listed Standard and Premium editions. Its lifecycle began September 1, 2006; that lifecycle date, rather than the earlier planned schedule, is the date to use when identifying the product’s lifecycle.
Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists the dates in Pacific Time and cautions that support for the package depends on the lifecycles of its individual components. An installed server may include components with their own lifecycle histories, so the suite’s dates should not be treated as a substitute for identifying those components. Microsoft’s period announcement described these additions and changes. They explain the release historically; they do not imply that the services or software remain supported or available today.

The launch announcement also described Exchange Server 2003 SP2 mobility features when integrated with Windows Mobile devices: direct push for near-real-time Outlook access, password policy management, and remote device wipe. These were features of that period’s Microsoft software and devices, not a compatibility claim for current phones or email services. Microsoft’s SBS 2003 R2 launch announcement.
Standard vs. Premium: what can be established?
The available Microsoft descriptions establish one specific distinction: Premium included SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition technology. They do not provide a complete side-by-side specification for the two editions, so other differences should not be inferred from this summary.

| Edition | Established distinction | What to check in an inherited deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | The cited product announcement does not state a corresponding SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition inclusion for Standard. | Identify installed components and the license/CAL documentation associated with the server; the cited descriptions do not establish all edition-specific rights. |
| Premium | Included SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition technology, according to Microsoft’s announcement. | Confirm whether that SQL component is installed and which historical CAL rights are relevant to the deployment. |
Microsoft described expanded CAL rights for access to additional Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition servers on the SBS R2 network. That is a historical licensing description, not evidence that a particular installation has valid or transferable rights today.
Is SBS 2003 R2 still supported?
No. Microsoft lists mainstream support as ending April 13, 2011, and extended support as ending April 13, 2016. The extended-support end date is the decisive answer for an administrator evaluating an existing server: SBS 2003 R2 is out of support. The suite’s lifecycle dates do not establish the status of every separately installed component; Microsoft says package support depends on the lifecycles of its individual components. Where can I find SBS 2003 R2 documentation?
Microsoft’s Download Center lists a PDF archive of retired Windows Server 2003 and 2003 R2 content. The R2 material covers installation, product evaluation, getting started, planning and architecture, deployment, and content shipped with the product. It is a documentation archive, not a support channel or indication that the software is safe or supported to run. Microsoft Download Center: Windows Server 2003/R2 documentation.

Can you still buy SBS 2003 R2?
Microsoft’s launch materials described historical routes: Software Assurance customers could receive the release through their fulfillment channel for shipping and handling; customers without Software Assurance could buy an upgrade SKU; and an OEM/system-builder Technology Guarantee was planned for a limited period. Those were period-specific arrangements, not current purchasing options. The cited material does not establish a supported or legitimate current source for obtaining the software or licenses.
