mrinfo.exe is a legacy command-line utility for querying a multicast router about its interfaces and neighboring routers. The “only multicast command-line tool included with Windows” description comes from Microsoft Knowledge Base article 225158 and applies specifically to Windows 2000. It does not establish whether the utility is included with Windows 10, Windows 11, or current Windows Server releases.

What does mrinfo.exe do?

Microsoft’s archived KB225158 describes mrinfo.exe as a way to query a multicast router for information about its interfaces and neighbors. In practical terms, it asks a target router for details about its multicast-facing configuration and nearby routers; it is not a general-purpose tool for managing Windows multicast applications.

The KB article was last modified on February 23, 2007. Its statement that mrinfo.exe was the only multicast command-line tool included with Windows is explicitly about Windows 2000, not every Windows release.

How do you use mrinfo to query a multicast router?

The syntax documented by the archived Windows KB is:

mrinfo [-n] [-i address] [-t secs] [-r retries] destination

Here, destination is the address or name of the router to query. The options control how the query is sent and how the utility handles its response:

  • -n disables neighbor name resolution.
  • -i address selects the local interface address used to submit the query.
  • -t secs sets how long to wait for query responses.
  • -r retries sets the number of retries for SNMP queries.

For example, the documented option meanings indicate that a command would specify the router as the destination and could add -n to avoid resolving neighbor names. The KB syntax is historical documentation; it does not confirm that the executable is installed or available in a current Windows environment.

Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include mrinfo.exe?

The available documentation does not verify whether mrinfo.exe ships with Windows 10, Windows 11, or current Windows Server releases, nor whether it remains the only included multicast command-line tool. The Windows 2000 KB cannot establish present-day availability, and a broad Windows command reference does not prove absence merely because a tool is not listed.

Check the specific Windows version and installation you intend to use rather than assuming the Windows 2000 description still applies. The sources cited here do not provide a current, version-specific confirmation of inclusion or removal.

How does this differ from current Windows multicast documentation?

Microsoft’s current multicast material addresses related but different jobs:

  • Winsock multicast programming describes application-level multicast support, including IGMPv2/IGMPv3 for IPv4 and MLDv1/MLDv2 for IPv6. Applications use socket options or IOCTLs to join groups and control multicast behavior; this is API guidance, not a documented command-line substitute for querying router interfaces and neighbors.
  • WDS multicast commands in wdsutil cover inspecting multicast image transmissions and connected clients in Windows Deployment Services. That deployment-management purpose differs from querying a multicast router’s interface and neighbor information. The reference lists applicability for Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025; Windows 10 and 11; and Azure Local 2311.2 and later.

These capabilities should not be treated as direct replacements for mrinfo.exe: they document application programming and WDS transmission management, respectively, rather than the same router-query operation.

Is the FreeBSD mrinfo command the same program?

No equivalence is established. The FreeBSD mrinfo(8) manual describes a same-named tool that queries multicast router configuration using an ASK_NEIGHBORS IGMP message. That is a separate implementation; the shared name does not show that the FreeBSD command and Windows executable are identical or interchangeable.
