For a timer you use often, install the Google Clock app from the Play Store and pin it to your shelf. You can also ask Google Assistant to set one if Assistant is enabled on your device.
Method 1: Set a timer from Google Search
This is the quickest option for a one-off countdown and does not require opening a separate app.
- Open Chrome, or open the Chromebook launcher using the Everything button.
- Type Set a timer and press Enter.
- When the timer widget appears, click its displayed numbers to set the hours, minutes, and seconds. The widget initially shows a five-minute preset, according to Chrome Unboxed’s September 12, 2023 guide.
- Select a suggested time chip if one matches what you need, or finish setting the duration and click Start.
Use the widget’s full-screen control if you want the countdown displayed prominently.
Method 2: Use the Google Clock app
The Google Clock app is less obvious because you may need to find it through Google Play rather than the Chromebook’s built-in launcher.

- Open the Google Play Store on your Chromebook.
- Search for Clock and open the Google Clock app.
- Choose the app’s Timer function and set your countdown.
- To make it easier to reach next time, right-click the Clock icon on the shelf and select Pin.
Clock also includes alarms and a stopwatch, so it is useful if you want more than a countdown timer. Google Play availability can depend on the Chromebook, ChromeOS version, and device-management settings.
Set a timer with Google Assistant
If Assistant is available on your Chromebook, you can use a voice request or type a timer command. Google’s Assistant capability page gives the example: “Set a 15-minute timer for cookies.”

- Open Settings > Search and Assistant > Google Assistant and enable Assistant if the option is available.
- Say “Hey Google, set a timer for 15 minutes,” or press Search + A and type your request.
Assistant controls and availability can vary with device-management policies and rollout, so the setting or shortcut may not appear on every Chromebook.
Which Chromebook timer should you use?

Focus mode is a different kind of timer
ChromeOS Focus mode is designed for focused work, not simply for starting a basic countdown. It combines a task with a timer and offers sound and Do Not Disturb controls. Use it when you want a structured focus session; use Search or Clock for a straightforward timer.
