In RDP 10, Session Zoom enlarges the remote desktop as it is displayed on your local computer. It can make small text and icons easier to read on a high-DPI screen, but it does not change the remote computer’s display DPI. Because the client enlarges the image, it may look softer than content scaled on the remote host.

What Session Zoom does

Microsoft’s explanation of the feature describes a 4K client display using 200% local scaling to connect to a Windows 7 host whose remote session is presented at 100% DPI. In that situation, the remote desktop can appear too small. Session Zoom scales the session display on the client so its text and icons appear larger. This is client-side presentation scaling, not a change to the host’s display settings. Microsoft’s RDP 10 explanation describes this scenario and the feature.

How to use Zoom in the documented RDP 10 window

  1. Open the remote session in the classic Remote Desktop Connection window.
  2. Open the session window’s system menu.
  3. Choose a level under Zoom. Microsoft’s example shows 200% zoom.

The documented steps apply to the Windows 10-era client described by Microsoft. Menu wording and available levels can vary between client versions; do not assume every current Remote Desktop app has the same system-menu control. Microsoft’s feature article illustrates the classic window and Zoom menu.

When to use Zoom—and its trade-off

Use Session Zoom when the remote session is legible at its current resolution but its interface looks too small on your local high-DPI display. The larger presentation can improve readability. It may also soften text or graphics because the client is enlarging the rendered session; that is a possible clarity trade-off, not a guarantee that the session will become unusable or slower.

How Zoom differs from other display controls

Remote Desktop offers controls that can look similar but solve different problems. The distinction is whether the client merely scales the displayed image, fits it into a window, or changes the remote resolution. Microsoft’s supported RDP properties reference describes the related properties and notes that desktopscalefactor is being deprecated.

Control What it changes Remote resolution When it fits
Session Zoom Scales the session display on the client; the RDP 10-era example places it in the session window’s system menu. The cited explanation describes client-side scaling, not a change to host DPI or remote resolution. Microsoft Session content appears too small on the local display.
smart sizing Scales session content locally to fit a resized window. Does not adjust the remote resolution; it fits the existing session image. Microsoft You want the existing desktop to fit inside the client window.
dynamic resolution Updates the remote resolution when the local window is resized. Yes; the remote resolution changes to reflect the window size. Microsoft You want the remote desktop resolution to track changes to the client window.
desktopscalefactor Specifies a scale factor for the remote session. Not stated in the cited property definition. Microsoft Not a recommended long-term choice: Microsoft says this property is being deprecated.

What to check in current Remote Desktop clients

Microsoft’s 2025 documentation for the Remote Desktop client for Windows describes display options including fitting the session to a window, adjusting resolution when the window is resized, and a zoom control in certain display configurations. The exact controls depend on the client and its configuration, so use the current client documentation rather than assuming the older RDP 10 system-menu steps apply unchanged.

Other ways to make a remote desktop easier to read

For a fixed high-resolution session where items are simply too small, Microsoft’s separate legacy guide describes a Change the size of the display setting. That is a different interface description from the RDP 10 Session Zoom menu; do not treat the labels or steps as interchangeable. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection guide.
