Transparent video works only when the browser can decode and render the file’s alpha channel—not merely when it can play the video codec. For cross-browser overlays, provide separate encodings where needed, use multiple <source> elements, and test the actual files on your target browsers and devices. WebM with VP8 or VP9 can provide alpha in browsers that support it; Safari’s documented route is HEVC with alpha on iOS 13 and macOS Catalina.
Why a transparent video can appear opaque
A video overlay has two separate compatibility questions: can the browser play the codec, and can it decode that file’s transparency? A browser’s ability to play VP8 or VP9 does not establish that it will render their alpha channel.
MDN lists WebM with VP8 and VP9 among formats playable in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, but its codec guidance says Safari does not support alpha transparency in VP8 or VP9. Treat general playback support and alpha support as distinct capabilities: MDN’s video codec guide and MDN’s media container formats table.
Apple explains that HEVC with alpha stores a base image and an alpha layer together in one video track. A decoder that does not handle the alpha portion may still display the base image, but as an opaque rectangle rather than a transparent overlay. Which encoding should you provide?

The cited documentation does not establish a complete current browser-and-device matrix for every version, operating system, or encoded file. Do not label a format simply “cross-browser”; specify the combinations you have verified.
How to provide alternate video sources
Place alternate files in nested <source> elements inside the video element. MDN says the browser tries these sources in order and can move to a later one when it cannot play an earlier format. This selection behavior does not test whether alpha is actually rendered.

</video>Use files that your encoding and delivery pipeline has authored with the intended alpha channel. The example lists HEVC first for a deployment targeting Apple’s documented Safari platforms, followed by WebM for browsers that support its alpha path. Source order is not a universal compatibility guarantee: a browser may accept a format while failing to composite its alpha as intended. MDN documents the nested-source behavior in its HTML video element reference.
The nested image provides fallback content in implementations that do not play the video, but it is not a solution for a browser that plays the video as an opaque rectangle. If opacity would obscure content or look broken, choose an intentional fallback for that experience—such as an opaque video prepared for the background, a poster image, or non-video content—and make sure the page can present it when alpha is unavailable.

How to test the deployed overlay
- Define target combinations. List the browser, operating system, and device versions your page needs to support. Keep Apple’s stated Safari coverage tied to iOS 13 and macOS Catalina rather than assuming it covers every Safari release or platform.
- Verify each encoded asset. Confirm that the intended output retains alpha and is served in the expected format. A codec or container label alone cannot establish that the file contains usable transparency.
- Test compositing in the page. Load the deployed video over the real page background and check whether transparent regions reveal that background, rather than showing as a solid rectangle.
- Check fallback cases. Test a browser or device that cannot use the intended alpha path. Confirm whether the video fails, appears opaque, or gives way to the fallback, and ensure the result remains usable.
- Retest the delivery setup. Test the actual URLs and page configuration, including source order and playback behavior, rather than relying only on a local preview or a browser’s general format-support table.
No one source order, MIME type, or format name guarantees correct alpha compositing across browsers. The dependable approach is to match encodings to the target platforms and validate the delivered asset and fallback on each target combination.
