OpenCat is an open-source framework for building and programming quadruped robots, not a single robot model. For a physical STEM kit in the current Petoi lineup, start by comparing Bittle X V2, the robot-dog platform, with Nybble Q, its robot-cat alternative. The right setup guide depends on the robot’s hardware generation: current models use different documentation from legacy NyBoard builds.

What OpenCat is—and which robot to look at

PetoiCamp describes OpenCat as “an open-source Arduino and Raspberry Pi-based framework for building and programming quadruped robots.” The framework brings together movement, servo control, and inertial measurement unit (IMU) integration; Petoi sells physical robots built around it, particularly the Bittle and Nybble families. See the official OpenCat repository for the project description and its hardware-generation notes.

For a current physical kit aimed at coding and STEM activities, Bittle X V2 is the direct robot-dog option. Nybble Q is a current alternative for readers who prefer a cat form factor. Petoi’s current documentation lists Bittle X V2, Bittle X V2+Arm, and Nybble Q; compare the manual and configuration for the exact kit you intend to use rather than assuming that family names guarantee identical hardware or features.

Match the setup instructions to your hardware

OpenCat has more than one hardware generation. The original repository is for the legacy NyBoard platform and directs owners of current Bittle X and Nybble Q robots to OpenCatESP32. Choose instructions by the board and model in your kit, not simply by searching for “OpenCat.”

  1. Try default actions. Learn the robot’s built-in movements before changing code.
  2. Control joints. Explore how commands affect individual joints and how servo movement changes posture.
  3. Add commands. Make a small change and observe its effect instead of changing several variables at once.
  4. Compose actions. Combine commands into a sequence, then refine timing and movement.
  5. Progress through the curriculum. Use Petoi’s block-based resources as an accessible entry point, then work toward its C++ curriculum as learners are ready.

For younger learners or classroom use, this sequence offers concrete stages rather than requiring a learner to begin with a full robotics stack. Petoi also points to quadruped robotics competition projects for extending learning beyond the introductory exercises.

Where OpenCat fits in research and advanced projects

OpenCat can be used beyond introductory hobby programming. Petoi’s Research Spotlight groups work involving the platform into bio-inspired locomotion and gaits, edge AI and autonomous systems, robotics education, and sim-to-real reinforcement learning. These categories indicate potential directions for projects; a claim about a particular experiment or result should be checked against the named academic paper, not inferred from a vendor summary.

The same page says Petoi robots support C++ and Python APIs, are compatible with ROS/ROS2, and support Raspberry Pi and Nvidia Jetson Nano. Treat those as vendor-stated capabilities, not a universal compatibility guarantee for every board, robot revision, or add-on. In particular, the reviewed product documentation does not establish exact Raspberry Pi models for each current robot revision. Check the manual for the specific kit before planning an extension.

Practical limits and purchase checks

  • Surface matters: Petoi says its robots are intended for smooth surfaces and that walking on carpet may not be smooth. Consider the workspace as part of the kit decision.
  • Configurations differ: the current documentation separates Bittle X V2, Bittle X V2+Arm, and Nybble Q manuals. Verify the model, included assembly state, and any optional expansions for the specific listing.
  • Don’t assume accessory fit: Raspberry Pi support is described at a general platform level, but exact compatible Pi revisions for each current robot were not established in the product information cited here.
  • Confirm current purchase details: PetoiCamp says Bittle X is available on Amazon, but that does not establish a particular live listing, stock status, price, or kit configuration. Verify those details directly before buying.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
