The change concerns YouTube’s in-app miniplayer, not Android’s system picture-in-picture.
What changed in the YouTube miniplayer
The refreshed layout, reported rolling out to Android and iOS in May 2025, streamlined the controls over the video. The former bottom strip with play/pause and 10-second rewind and skip buttons was removed. The reported replacement keeps a play/pause button at the upper left and a close button at the upper right, with a progress indicator still visible. It also lets viewers tuck the miniplayer against the left or right edge and restore it using the handle.
9to5Google reported the Android change on May 21, 2025, after observing it in YouTube version 20.19.37; its update cited version 20.20.5 on iOS. These are historical rollout observations, not current minimum-version requirements. The available reporting does not establish a universal rollout schedule or guarantee that every account and device shows the same layout.
How to move, resize, hide, and restore it on Android
YouTube Help describes the Android in-app miniplayer as a way to keep watching while browsing YouTube: “With the Miniplayer, you can continue to watch videos, including playlists and live streams, while you browse YouTube.” The following controls are documented by YouTube Help:

- Open the miniplayer: While watching in the YouTube app, tap Back or swipe down. The player appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Move it: Touch and hold the player, then drag it to another part of the screen.
- Resize it: Double-tap the player or pinch it.
- Hide it: Drag or swipe the player toward a screen edge. The May 2025 refresh report specifically describes docking it at the left or right edge.
- Restore it: Tap the arrow or handle shown at the edge.
While the miniplayer is open, you can browse YouTube; tapping a different video thumbnail on Home switches playback to that video. YouTube Help says the miniplayer is unavailable for Shorts and videos marked Made for Kids. These general usage instructions are distinct from the precise appearance of the May 2025 refreshed controls, which may vary by rollout.
What happens to playback when the player is hidden
YouTube Help says playback pauses when a non-Premium viewer hides the miniplayer and resumes when it becomes visible again. It identifies background play as a YouTube Premium feature. Reporting around the May 2025 refresh described a discrepancy: Android Authority said YouTube announced that hiding the miniplayer would pause playback and showing it again would resume where it left off, while 9to5Google said playback continued in its observation. So the Help page states the general behavior, but the rollout reports did not show identical behavior in every observation.

How this differs from the 2024 miniplayer update
YouTube’s 2024 features roundup had already announced that viewers could move and resize the mobile miniplayer while browsing and queuing videos. The May 2025 reporting concerns a later controls refresh and edge-docking behavior. The distinction matters: move-and-resize was not itself new in 2025, and the historical version numbers reported in May 2025 should not be treated as requirements for using the current feature.

In-app miniplayer versus Android picture-in-picture
The miniplayer described here stays inside the YouTube app while you browse YouTube. Android system picture-in-picture is a separate, system-level floating window that can sit over other apps. The May 2025 report is about YouTube’s in-app interface; it does not describe a change to Android’s system picture-in-picture controls.
