Researchers did build a small, electricity-driven plasma-thruster prototype—but they did not build or fly an all-electric airplane engine. In a 2020 Wuhan University experiment, microwaves ionized and heated air to produce a jet. The result demonstrated a propulsion concept on a laboratory bench, not a practical replacement for a conventional aircraft engine.
What the scientists actually built
The work was published on May 5, 2020, in AIP Advances by Dan Ye, Jun Li, and Jau Tang of Wuhan University’s Institute of Technological Sciences. Their paper, “Jet propulsion by microwave air plasma in the atmosphere”, describes a prototype that uses microwaves to ionize injected air and create a hot plasma jet. The authors proposed atmospheric propulsion as a possible application; the paper did not report an aircraft test.
AIP Publishing’s summary of the experiment describes a setup with a microwave power supply, air compressor, compressed microwave waveguide, and flame ignitor. The prototype lifted a 1-kilogram steel ball above a 24-millimeter-diameter quartz tube. That showed the apparatus could produce an upward force in the test configuration.
AIP also compared the measured pressure with pressure from a commercial airplane jet engine. This was a pressure comparison, not a demonstration of equal total thrust, fuel economy, durability, aircraft integration, or flight performance. A small tube lifting a steel ball is not equivalent to an engine propelling an airplane.

How it produces thrust—and what “electric” means here
The prototype uses electrical input to generate microwaves, which transfer energy to the injected air and form plasma. The resulting hot, moving gas produces a jet. It is an air-breathing concept: the apparatus takes in air rather than carrying all of the reaction mass as a rocket does.
“Powered only by electricity” describes the proposed propulsion mechanism, not a complete aircraft energy system demonstrated in the experiment. The laboratory setup also needed an air compressor. The authors later said its power draw was not included in their microwave-power comparison. The sources do not establish an onboard electrical supply, full-system energy balance, or flight-ready efficiency for this design.

What the experiment does—and does not—establish
The researchers responded to methodological criticism in 2020. They described the steel-ball arrangement as a simple pressure meter and acknowledged that it might not be accurate, while saying they considered it sufficient to demonstrate the prototype’s working principle. They reported expected errors of 10–15% in microwave-power readings and 20% in airflow readings.
The authors estimated energy-conversion efficiency at around 10%, based on their model and interpretation of the experiment. This is an author-reported estimate, not an independently validated flight-efficiency figure or a complete accounting of system power. Their response also noted that about 100 watts of compressor power was sufficient for the experimental airflow rate, and that this additional draw was not included in the microwave-power comparison.

Scaling was still unresolved. The authors wrote, “Challenges to scale up the operation power to MW need to be solved by research in the future.” AIP’s suggestion that an array of high-power microwave sources might scale toward a full-sized jet is a proposal, not a result already demonstrated.
How this compares with newer aircraft-electrification work
Recent aircraft electrification programs provide useful context, but they are not the same design as the microwave plasma thruster. NASA and JAXA describe hybrid or partially turboelectric systems that combine gas turbines or jet fuel with electric motors, generators, or fans. The projects are at ground-test or development stages in the cited reports; none demonstrates a passenger aircraft propelled solely by electricity.

NASA’s hybrid-engine test report says its project aims for up to 10% less fuel use than best-in-class engines. That is a project goal, not a measured saving established by the reported test. JAXA’s MEGAWATT project page describes its hybrid-propulsion development and ground tests. NASA’s STARC-ABL overview identifies its system as partially turboelectric and presents its fuel reduction as potential.

Not on the evidence available here. The 2020 study is an early laboratory demonstration of microwave-driven air plasma, not an aircraft engine qualified for flight. The authors themselves identified measurement uncertainty, excluded compressor power from their microwave-power comparison, and described megawatt-scale operation as future research. The experiment supports continued investigation of the concept; it does not show that it can yet match a conventional jet engine in thrust, efficiency, reliability, or practical aircraft use.
