The ARCHOS GamePad was a 7-inch Android tablet announced in August 2012 with built-in physical game controls. ARCHOS paired a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU with software it said could map touchscreen controls to the buttons and sticks. The announcement specified Android 4.0; a January 2013 hands-on report later described the device running Android 4.1.1.

What is the ARCHOS GamePad?

ARCHOS announced the GamePad on August 29, 2012, describing it as its first gaming tablet. It combined a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen with a D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons and analog sticks, so players could use physical inputs instead of relying only on on-screen controls. Engadget’s coverage of the announcement reproduced the launch details.

The idea was to make an Android tablet more suitable for games while retaining access to Android apps and Google Play. The physical controls were part of the device, not a separate controller that needed to be carried or connected.

What were the announced ARCHOS GamePad specs?

These are launch-era reported specifications, not independent performance or compatibility test results.

The processor and graphics figures describe the hardware ARCHOS announced; they do not establish how well the tablet performed in games. The contemporaneous reports do not provide benchmark results or battery-life figures.

How were the GamePad’s physical controls meant to work with Android games?

ARCHOS’s stated differentiator was automatic game recognition and control mapping. Its software was intended to identify a game’s on-screen virtual controls and assign them to the GamePad’s physical buttons and sticks. That approach was aimed at games designed for touchscreens, as well as games with controller support.

ARCHOS claimed that more than a thousand Android games were compatible. That was the company’s announcement-era claim, not an independently verified count, and it should not be read as a guarantee that every game worked equally well with the controls. Mapping touchscreen inputs and having native controller support are different things: the former translates button presses into touch input, while the latter depends on the game recognizing a controller.

Which Android version did it have, and when was it expected?

The dates matter because the launch plan and later coverage differ. The August 2012 announcement specified Android 4.0 and said the GamePad was expected around the end of 2012. In a January 8, 2013 hands-on report, Engadget described the device running Android 4.1.1 and said it was arriving in North America that month. The later version should not be confused with the original announcement specification.

What did ARCHOS say it would cost?

ARCHOS announced a planned price of less than €150, as reported in Engadget’s August 2012 launch coverage. This was a historical launch target, not a current price or evidence that new units are available today.

Why did ARCHOS build it?

ARCHOS founder and CEO Henri Crohas connected the idea to Android’s controller support: “When Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, was first released they included game controller support within the framework and that is when we decided to build the GamePad.” The statement appeared in contemporary Engadget announcement coverage.

What is established—and what is not—about the GamePad today?

The historical reports establish what ARCHOS announced and what a January 2013 hands-on report described. They do not establish current availability, used-device value, present-day app or security compatibility, battery condition, repair support, or compatibility with particular microSD cards or displays. Those details need to be checked for the specific unit and intended use; the original launch specifications alone cannot answer them.
