iOS 5 brought Notification Center, iMessage, iCloud features, and on-device setup to compatible iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices. This walkthrough explains how those features were designed to work and which models supported them; Apple’s archived notes describe the release, not whether its activation or online services still work today.
What iOS 5 introduced
Apple described iOS 5 as containing “over 200 new features, including bug fixes.” That wording appears on its archived About iOS 5 page, which displays a published date of November 15, 2023. The page is a record of the update’s features, not a confirmation that the services remain available on legacy devices.
- Notification Center gathered alerts in one place.
- iMessage enabled messaging between iOS 5 users over cellular or Wi-Fi.
- iCloud added services for photos, documents, backups, and synced information.
- Setup Assistant allowed setup, activation, and configuration on the device, while software updates could be installed over the air without tethering to a computer.
How to use Notification Center
Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Notification Center and review notifications together. New alerts appeared briefly at the top of the screen, and notifications could also be viewed on the lock screen. Tap a notification’s app icon to open the associated app.
How iMessage worked
iMessage sent text, photo, and video messages to other iOS 5 users. Apple’s feature notes describe delivery and read receipts, group messaging, and use over cellular or Wi-Fi. If iMessage was unavailable, a message could instead be sent as SMS; carrier messaging fees could apply. These are the release’s documented features, not a guarantee that iMessage or SMS currently works on an iOS 5 device.

What iCloud added
Apple’s iOS 5 notes list these iCloud-related functions:
- Photo Stream and Documents in the Cloud
- Backup, contacts, calendars, and mail
- Find My iPhone
- iTunes in the Cloud, automatic app and book downloads, and purchase history
Reminders could sync with iCloud, iCal, and Outlook. Apple specifies location-based arrival and departure reminders for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. The archived feature list does not establish whether any of these online services can still be used from a legacy device.

Camera, photos, and other everyday changes
iOS 5 added camera shortcuts on specified devices, let users use the Volume Up button as a shutter, and included grid lines and preview zoom. Photos gained editing and organization tools. Camera behavior varied: iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch supported exposure lock only, rather than focus and exposure locking together.
Other additions included Newsstand, which organized magazine and newspaper subscriptions and downloaded new issues in the background; Twitter integration; Mail and Calendar improvements; Game Center changes; keyboard and accessibility improvements; and Exchange ActiveSync changes. Apple also listed AirPlay Mirroring for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, iPad multitasking gestures, and more than 1,500 new developer APIs.

Over-the-air updates and maintenance releases
iOS 5 introduced software updates over the air, so updating did not require tethering the device to a computer. Apple’s archived notes also label iOS 5.0.1 as available via iTunes. They document historical update methods; they do not establish whether an old device can activate, reach update services, or install an update now.
The maintenance releases added or changed features as follows:

What to know before relying on an old iOS 5 device
The archived notes explain what Apple introduced and which hardware it listed as compatible. They do not establish current activation, iCloud, iMessage, app-download, or update-service availability. Do not assume that a historical setup path or online feature will still work on a device running iOS 5.
