A 2020 Reddit post reported a $0.99 rental, but that anecdote does not establish that the deal is active, recurring, or available to everyone. To check, look at the price shown on the movie’s page in your own Google account and country.
How to check a movie’s rental price
Google’s current instructions are to open a movie’s page and choose Rent if that option is offered. The displayed price and available features can vary by country, so rely on the title page rather than an old promotion or a price reported by someone else.

- On an Android phone or tablet: Open Google TV, search for the movie, and open its title page. Google’s help instructions also refer to Google Play Movies & TV; the mobile movie destination moved to Google TV in September 2022.
- On a computer: Go to play.google.com, open Movies, and select the movie.
- Check the displayed price and choose Rent if you want to proceed. If a 99-cent price or discount is not shown for your account, the historical report does not establish that you can claim it.
- Before renting, check the title page’s Additional Information section for its Rental Period.

Where Google movie rentals are now
Google moved mobile movie buying, renting, and viewing from the Movies & TV section of the Play Store to the Google TV app beginning in September 2022. Google said existing purchases would remain available in Google TV. Google’s September 2022 transition notice.

Google’s current app listing describes renting or buying titles through the Google TV app’s Shop tab. It also describes playback on laptops, Android phones and tablets, and TVs with Google TV or Play Movies & TV where available. Options depend on region and device; check the title and your device for compatibility. Google TV on Google Play.
What the 99-cent report does—and does not—show
A 2020 post in the Reddit community r/ShopCanada reported a $0.99 Google Play movie rental. It was an individual, historical offer report, not a Google announcement. It does not confirm current availability, broad eligibility, or a recurring promotion. 2020 r/ShopCanada post.

Do you need a special device to rent?
No. Google’s rental instructions describe selecting a title and choosing Rent; they do not require a separate streaming device. A compatible TV or streaming device may be useful if you want to watch on a television, but confirm support for your region and device before renting. Google’s app listing describes TV viewing where available; it does not endorse a particular device.
