Gemini for Home is Google’s upgrade to the voice assistant on Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. Early access is enrolled through the Google Home app, but sign-up does not guarantee immediate access: Google says it will notify you in the app when your turn is ready. The core voice assistant is included with the device; several advanced features require Google Home Premium.
What Gemini for Home changes
Google describes Gemini for Home as a more conversational assistant that keeps “Hey Google” as its wake phrase. Its announced use cases include combining smart-home actions in one request, controlling lights while adjusting the temperature, asking for cooking help, finding media, and troubleshooting a household problem. These are examples from Google, not independent performance tests. See Google’s launch announcement.
Google said enrolled users’ voice assistant would be upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini. Existing speakers and smart displays are part of the rollout plan, but Google’s launch announcement does not provide a complete, current model-by-model compatibility list. Check eligibility for your exact device before relying on support.
How to request early access
- Update the Google Home app to version 4.0 or later, as specified in Google’s October 1, 2025 launch announcement.
- Open the app and tap your profile icon.
- Go to Home settings > Early access and follow the enrollment prompts.
- Wait for an in-app notification that access is available. Enrollment is a request, not an immediate activation guarantee.
Google announced early-access rollouts in the U.S. on October 28, 2025, Australia on April 10, 2026, and Japan on April 8, 2026. These dated announcements do not establish a complete current list of eligible countries or guarantee availability to every user in those regions. See Google’s U.S. rollout update, Australia announcement, and Japan announcement.

What is included, and what requires Google Home Premium?
Google says the core voice assistant upgrade is included with the device. Its launch and rollout announcements place several additional capabilities under Google Home Premium:
- Gemini Live conversations with the assistant.
- AI-powered notifications and Home Brief.
- Searching camera video history.
- Creating automations by asking Ask Home.
Google’s October 28, 2025 update gives “Hey Google, let’s chat” as an example prompt for Gemini Live and describes voice-created automations and camera-history search as Premium features. Plan terms and feature availability can change, so check Google Home Premium’s current terms in your region before subscribing. Google’s feature examples explain what it announced, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every enrolled account.

How to use the assistant and keep a conversation going
Google’s published examples show the kinds of requests it intends Gemini for Home to handle. For instance, the company suggests asking, “My dishwasher isn’t draining, what should I check first?” That is an example prompt, not a promise of a particular troubleshooting result. Google also says enrolled users can give feedback in the Home app or by saying “Hey Google, send feedback.”
Enable Continued Conversation
Google says Continued Conversation keeps the microphone active for a few seconds after the assistant’s first answer, so you can ask a follow-up without repeating the wake phrase. In its April 21, 2026 announcement, Google said the feature was available across supported languages and regions and worked for household members and guests. To enable it, open Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation. Details are in Google’s Continued Conversation guide.

Do you need a new speaker?
No new speaker is identified as a prerequisite for requesting early access: Google’s launch announcement describes bringing Gemini for Home to existing speakers and smart displays. Whether a particular device is eligible still depends on its model and current rollout status, which the announcement does not fully enumerate.
For readers considering new hardware, Google announced the Google Home Speaker as a device built for Gemini for Home. Google listed a $99.99 launch price and a June 25, 2026 shelf date in its June 17, 2026 announcement; those are historical launch details, not confirmation of today’s price or stock. Compare your current device’s eligibility and the features you actually want before deciding to replace or add hardware. See Google’s Google Home Speaker announcement.
