You can make NFC payments with a Windows Phone only if the phone, its software, wallet, carrier or SIM, payment provider, bank or card, country, and checkout terminal all support the same setup. NFC hardware by itself is not enough. Microsoft’s old instructions describe historical features, but Windows 10 Mobile is unsupported and current Microsoft Wallet payments are unverified.
Can a Windows Phone still make contactless payments?
Possibly, on a phone and payment setup that was supported and provisioned—but there is no verified basis to promise that Microsoft Wallet transactions work today. Microsoft does not provide a definitive Wallet payment shutdown date in the cited support information, and no current transaction test is established here. That means neither “all old payments definitely fail” nor “the service still works” is a safe conclusion.
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Mobile on January 14, 2020. Unsupported Windows versions no longer receive technical support or software and security updates. Microsoft also marks its Windows.ApplicationModel.Wallet namespace unsupported and advises developers to avoid it. These facts establish that the platform is unsupported; they do not establish when, or whether, every previously provisioned payment stopped working. Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile end-of-support FAQ and Microsoft Learn’s Wallet namespace page describe those platform limitations.
What had to be compatible?
Payment depended on a chain of requirements. A phone could have NFC and still be unable to pay if any other part was missing or unsupported.

How did Windows Phone 8 and Windows 10 Mobile differ?
| Platform and historical release | Phones or software noted | Payment conditions described |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Phone 8 (Microsoft announcement, June 20, 2012) | The announcement described Wallet as a place to store cards and other items; it did not establish universal support across all NFC phones. | Microsoft said payment could be made at compatible checkout counters when paired with a secure SIM from the carrier. Windows Experience Blog: Introducing Windows Phone 8 |
| Windows 10 Mobile (Microsoft launch announcement, 2016) | The initial U.S. phone list was Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, and Lumia 650. The announcement mentioned Insider build 14360 or higher. | Tap-to-pay was described for locations displaying a contactless-payment symbol or Microsoft Wallet logo. This is launch-era availability information, not confirmation of current service. Windows Experience Blog: Microsoft Wallet with Tap to Pay is Here |
How to try the historical Lumia setup
The following path comes from a historical Lumia Windows 10 Mobile guide. It may differ by phone, software build, provider, or region, and the presence of the setting does not prove that a payment service can be used now. Use it only if the option exists on your device.
- Open Settings > Devices > NFC.
- Switch Tap to pay on, if that option appears.
- Check whether your payment provider supports the phone and service, whether any required subscription or carrier/SIM arrangement is active, and whether the provider’s app is added in Wallet.
- At a participating checkout, hold the phone’s NFC area near the contactless reader and follow any prompts shown on the phone or terminal.
The steps and conditions are described in a Lumia 950 Windows 10 Mobile guide. A separate Lumia 640 Windows Phone 8.1 guide warns that NFC is not supported on every phone, makes payment or ticket use conditional on service-provider support, and describes tapping the phone’s NFC area against the reader.

What to check if the setting or payment does not work
- No NFC or Tap to pay option: Confirm the exact phone model and software version. NFC and the payment setting were not universal across Windows Phones.
- Option exists but Wallet cannot add a payment method: The provider, carrier/SIM arrangement, bank or card, country, or app may not support that combination. An NFC toggle cannot resolve those service dependencies.
- Phone is configured but the reader does not accept payment: The terminal may not accept the relevant payment method, or the historical service may no longer be operational. Current Microsoft Wallet transaction availability is unverified.
- Considering a new setup: Do not assume an old menu path or an available NFC phone means you can newly provision Microsoft Wallet. The platform is unsupported, and current provisioning is not confirmed by Microsoft’s cited status information.
