Apple’s story began with a small computer venture in 1976, but it did not become a global technology company through the iPhone alone. Its evolution spans personal computers, digital music, mobile devices, and services—a sequence Apple itself highlights in its 2026 anniversary account.
How Apple began in 1976
Apple dates its founding to April 1, 1976. The Library of Congress’s historical guide describes Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak building the Apple I in the Jobs family garage. The garage is a memorable part of the origin story, but it is best understood as the Library of Congress’s account of the early work, not as a complete explanation of how the company grew.

The Apple I was an early computer project; the company’s later reach came from developing products for broader audiences and expanding into new kinds of technology. Apple’s current retrospective places the Apple I at the beginning of a lineage that includes the Apple II and Macintosh.
From early computers to the Macintosh
Apple II and personal computing
Apple’s 2026 anniversary account names the Apple II as one of its defining early products. Alongside the Apple I, it represents the company’s first era: building computers before Apple’s story extended into music players, phones, wearables, and services.

Macintosh and a continuing computer line
Apple also identifies the Macintosh as a major milestone. The Mac remains part of the company’s present-day product family, linking its early computer work with a much broader business. In Apple’s own history, the Macintosh is not an endpoint but one stage in a succession of products.
iPod and iPhone: Apple moves into consumer media and mobile computing
iPod widened the company’s reach
Apple’s anniversary account places the iPod after its early computers and before the iPhone. That order captures an important shift in the company’s public product story: Apple was no longer defined only by computers, but also by devices for carrying and enjoying digital media.

What Apple said the iPhone would combine
When Apple introduced iPhone on January 9, 2007, it described the device as combining “a phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and an internet communications device.” That was Apple’s launch positioning: a single product pitched around communication, media, and internet access.
Steve Jobs also called iPhone “a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone.” This was promotional language from the launch announcement, not an independently established comparison of phones.

The first sales milestone
On September 9, 2007, Apple announced that it had sold its one-millionth iPhone, 74 days after the product’s introduction. That milestone is a company-reported figure; it helps mark the early momentum Apple reported, but does not by itself measure the iPhone’s wider industry impact.

Apple’s March 2026 anniversary account presents its history as an expanding lineup rather than a single-product story. Alongside Apple II and Macintosh, it names iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. It also points to services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud, and Apple TV.

That breadth is the clearest answer to how a garage-era computer venture became a global technology company: Apple’s own account traces successive moves from computers into consumer media, mobile devices, wearables, spatial computing, and services. The iPhone is a defining milestone in that history, but it sits within a much longer expansion.
