If your Chromebook does not support that app—or you have VPN credentials from work, school, or a provider—you can use a compatible ChromeOS VPN configuration instead. A Chrome extension is another option, but it may protect only traffic inside Chrome.
Can I use a VPN on my Chromebook?
Yes. Google says a Chromebook can connect to a private network, such as one at work or school, using a VPN. Depending on the Chromebook, ChromeOS version, VPN service, and device-management rules, you may be able to use an Android VPN app, configure a supported VPN in ChromeOS, or install a Chrome extension.
For most personal Chromebooks with Play Store support, start with the VPN provider’s official Android app. If the device is managed by a school or employer, its administrator may control whether you can install apps or change VPN settings.
How do I install a VPN on a Chromebook with the Play Store?

Open the Launcher and select Play Store. Search for your VPN provider’s official Android app, check that it is the provider’s listing, and install it.

Open the app, sign in or create an account, and choose Connect or a server location. The wording and available locations vary by provider.

If ChromeOS asks for permission to set up a VPN connection, review the prompt and approve it if you trust the app and intend to use it.

Check that the app reports a connected state. If you need protection if the connection drops, look for the Android VPN settings described below; their availability depends on the Chromebook and app.
Google notes that Android apps are available on Chromebooks with the Play Store, while some Google Play preferences are limited to certain Chromebook models. App availability and menus can therefore differ. Proton’s Chromebook installation instructions are one provider’s example of installing its Android app from the Play Store, signing in, and connecting.

How do I configure a VPN built into ChromeOS?
Use ChromeOS’s built-in configuration if your VPN provider, employer, or school gave you connection details for a supported protocol. This is not a consumer VPN subscription: it is a way to configure a connection to a VPN server for which you have the required credentials.

Open Settings → Network → Add connection.

Select the compatible VPN option offered by your Chromebook. Google documents built-in IKEv2 and L2TP/IPsec, basic OpenVPN support, and basic WireGuard support on some Chromebooks.

Enter the server hostname and authentication details supplied by your VPN provider or organization administrator. The exact fields depend on the protocol and ChromeOS version.

Save the configuration and connect. If the option you need is missing or the connection fails, ask the provider or administrator whether your Chromebook and its configuration are supported.

Google describes its built-in support as basic for some protocols. For advanced OpenVPN options or importing an .ovpn file, Google advises considering OpenVPN for Android on a Chromebook that supports the Play Store. Should I use a VPN app or a Chrome extension?
Choose based on what traffic you need to protect and what your Chromebook supports. A browser extension is not automatically equivalent to a device-level VPN app. NordVPN’s support guidance, for example, says its Chrome extension protects traffic within Chrome, while its Android app protects the device more broadly. Coverage depends on the particular product and configuration.

Google explains that a full-tunnel VPN can route traffic from Chrome windows, Chrome apps, and Android apps through the VPN, while split tunneling sends selected traffic outside it. The exact scope depends on implementation and configuration. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends checking that ChromeOS, Crostini (Linux), and Android traffic are protected where needed, and that the VPN starts automatically.
How can I reduce the risk of a VPN drop exposing traffic?
Some Android VPN configurations on ChromeOS offer Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. The latter prevents direct internet access if the VPN stops, until the VPN connection returns. These controls are not available through every setup route or on every Chromebook.

Open the Chromebook’s Android VPN settings and select the VPN app, if your device exposes these options.

Turn on Always-on VPN if you want the connection to start automatically and the option is available.

Turn on Block connections without VPN if you want internet access blocked when the VPN is disconnected. Confirm that the setting works as expected for your device and app before relying on it.
Will a VPN protect everything on my Chromebook?
Not necessarily. A VPN app configured for full-device or full-tunnel use can route more than browser traffic, but a Chrome extension may cover only Chrome. Split tunneling, app behavior, and ChromeOS implementation can also mean some traffic does not use the VPN. If you need coverage for Linux, Android, or ChromeOS traffic, check the VPN’s documented scope and verify each environment rather than assuming all Chromebook traffic is protected.

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server and routes it through that server. Proton describes this as making the VPN server’s IP address visible to websites and preventing your internet service provider from monitoring activity in that encrypted segment. This does not make you anonymous: signing in to websites can identify you, cookies remain relevant, and a VPN alone does not establish what data its operator retains.
What if I cannot install or connect to a VPN?

The Play Store is missing: Your Chromebook may not support Android apps, or the Play Store may be disabled by an administrator. Check device support or ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass a policy.

The app is unavailable or will not connect: Confirm the app supports your Chromebook and ChromeOS version, then check the provider’s current setup instructions.

A built-in protocol or setting is absent: ChromeOS support varies. Ask the VPN provider or organization administrator which protocol and credentials to use for your device.
