Pale Moon’s January 26, 2016, release of version 26.0.0 marked the browser’s formal move from identifying its engine as Gecko to using the name Goanna. Goanna is an independently developed fork of Gecko, not a guarantee of identical behavior or website compatibility. The release also updated interface controls and colors for Windows 10.
What is the Goanna browser engine?
Goanna is the open-source layout and rendering engine used by applications built on the Unified XUL Platform (UXP), including Pale Moon. A browser engine interprets web content and renders pages; it is distinct from the browser’s interface and other application features. The Goanna project describes it as closely related to Gecko, but not a perfect behavioral match. It is not intended to be used as a standalone library. Pale Moon’s project site provides current product context, while the Goanna project page explains the engine’s role.
When did Pale Moon switch to Goanna?
Pale Moon 26.0.0 was released on January 26, 2016. Its release notes announced: “Pale Moon is now building on the new Goanna engine instead of Gecko.” The project’s history places the named Goanna milestone at version 26.0, while noting that the code had already developed independently for some time, with a notable split point at version 24.6. So v26 was the adoption and naming milestone, not an overnight technical fork. The v26.0.0 release notes and Pale Moon’s project history document the transition.
Is Goanna the same as Gecko?
No. Goanna descends from Gecko, but Pale Moon and Goanna describe it as an independently developed engine with differences in behavior and supported tags. The v26 change was more than a change of label: the release notes cite updates to the layout parser and renderer intended to improve web compatibility and standards compliance. Those aims do not mean every site will render or behave the same as it would in a Gecko-based browser.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Lineage: Goanna is forked from Gecko, but the code had diverged before the v26.0 announcement.
- Behavior: The projects do not claim that Goanna and Gecko are perfect matches in rendering or supported web features.
- Compatibility: Test the websites and extensions you depend on; engine ancestry alone does not establish parity.
- Product priorities: Pale Moon emphasizes an independent browser, a classic customizable interface, and selective platform changes. Its technical overview discusses its Goanna and UXP foundations.
Why does Pale Moon look different from Firefox?
The engine is only one part of a browser’s identity. Pale Moon is an independent fork built on Goanna and UXP, and its interface follows its own design priorities rather than copying Firefox’s current appearance. In version 26.0.0, Pale Moon adjusted control shapes and colors to better fit Windows 10 while retaining its broader classic, customizable interface approach. The release notes also mention rendering, graphics, and media changes, but these do not make Pale Moon’s interface or behavior identical to Firefox.
What compatibility issue did the v26 release identify?
Pale Moon’s v26.0.0 release notes warned that websites relying on user-agent detection might not recognize the browser and could serve a mobile presentation. That was a risk identified by the project, not a measured failure rate. It also should not be treated as proof that the same specific issue persists unchanged today.

Current guidance is broader: Pale Moon says some websites may not work out of the box because they were designed around a Chrome-centric web, and some may need special handling or a secondary browser. The project also cautions that websites can display differently and that Firefox-specific configuration advice may not apply. If a site is important, check it directly in Pale Moon and keep an alternative browser available for cases where the site’s features or presentation do not work as needed. Pale Moon’s homepage describes its current website-compatibility guidance.

Version 26.0.0 is a historical milestone, not the current Pale Moon release. The project’s release page lists version 35.0.1, dated September 22, 2026, as a bugfix and security release, and version 35.0.0, dated September 17, 2026, as a milestone focused primarily on web compatibility. Its roadmap describes continued work on UXP and Goanna, selective platform changes, and a classic customizable interface. These are the project’s stated direction, not a promise that every website or extension will be supported. The official release notes provide the current version chronology, and the roadmap outlines the project’s direction.
