Tim Cook did not say Apple may never stop its AI from “lying.” In a June 2024 interview, the Apple CEO said he would not claim Apple Intelligence was 100 percent reliable and that he expected its quality to be high. The “lying” wording came from a headline, not Cook’s answer.
What did Tim Cook say about Apple Intelligence hallucinations?
In an interview with The Washington Post published June 11, 2024, Josh Tyrangiel asked Cook, “What’s your confidence that Apple Intelligence will not hallucinate?” Cook replied that it was “not 100 percent.” He said Apple had done everything it knew to do to assess the technology’s readiness in the areas where it planned to use it, and that he was confident the quality would be very high. Did Cook say Apple may never make its AI stop lying?
No. The phrase “may never be able to make its AI stop lying” is the framing used by a June 13, 2024, Futurism headline. Cook spoke about hallucinations and the limits of claiming perfect reliability; he did not say Apple would never reduce or eliminate them, and he did not describe the AI as intentionally lying. What does “not 100 percent” tell us—and what doesn’t it?
It communicates Cook’s reluctance to promise perfect reliability, alongside his expectation of high quality. It is not a measured error rate. Neither the interview nor the headline article reports how often Apple Intelligence hallucinates, so these sources cannot establish a rate or independently verify how well the features perform.

What Apple Intelligence uses did Cook describe?
Cook presented the system as a way to save customers time. He cited Siri handling multiple steps in a single request and Writing Tools proofreading text or changing its tone. He also discussed privacy and Apple’s use of existing resources, including Apple silicon, for cloud capabilities. These were Cook’s descriptions of Apple’s intended uses and approach; the interview itself does not independently demonstrate their performance or privacy properties.
What did Cook say about OpenAI?
In the same June 2024 interview, Cook called OpenAI a pioneer and said it had “the best model” at that time. He described the integration as a first step and said Apple was integrating with other providers as well. That was his assessment then, not a current ranking of AI models.
