The Motorola DH01 was a handheld TV receiver and DVR previewed ahead of CES 2008. Its 4.3-inch screen was designed to show live DVB-H broadcasts, on-demand video clips and recorded programs, with a five-minute buffer for pausing and replaying live TV. The device’s features depended on DVB-H coverage, which was then limited to trials and planned rollouts.
What was the Motorola DH01?
The DH01 was a portable mobile-TV player that Motorola planned to demonstrate at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. BetaNews described it on January 3, 2008 as both a handheld television receiver and a mobile DVR. Its screen measured 4.3 inches, and Motorola said playback ran at 25 frames per second. BetaNews’s January 3, 2008 preview reported those product claims.
It was not simply a video player for files copied onto a card: its intended use included receiving live television over a broadcast network, as well as viewing on-demand clips and DVR recordings. The preview does not establish a confirmed launch date, retail price or final production status.
How did the DH01 receive television?
The DH01 supported DVB-H, short for Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld. DVB-H was a broadcast standard designed for battery-powered handheld receivers. Unlike streaming video over a modern internet connection, the DH01’s live-TV function depended on compatible DVB-H broadcast coverage in the viewer’s area.

BetaNews placed the device in the context of DVB-H trials and expected rollouts in 2008. It reported that Las Vegas was one of three U.S. cities with trial infrastructure, and that nationwide coverage in the Netherlands was expected before the end of the first quarter of 2008. Austria, France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland were expected to follow later that year. These were plans reported at the time, not evidence of current service availability.
DVB-H compared with other mobile-TV systems
| Approach | What the DH01 preview establishes |
|---|---|
| DVB-H | The DH01 was designed to receive this handheld-broadcast standard. |
| MediaFLO | Named as a separate mobile-TV ecosystem in the period; the preview does not establish DH01 compatibility. |
| T-DMB | Named as another mobile-TV ecosystem; the preview does not establish DH01 compatibility. |
Could it pause live television?
Yes. Motorola’s reported feature set included a five-minute memory buffer that let viewers pause and replay live broadcasts. That time-shifting feature applied to the live broadcast being watched; the preview does not explain additional recording controls or how long DVR programs could be kept.

What could it play and record?
Motorola said the DH01 would handle three kinds of video: live television, on-demand video clips and DVR programming. Recorded programs could be stored on SD memory cards. The preview does not specify the maximum card capacity, supported file formats, recording duration or whether a card was included.
How portable was it?
The 4.3-inch screen made the DH01 a handheld device, but its practical viewing time was constrained by its rechargeable battery. Motorola’s reported estimate was about four hours of playback. That is a 2008 product claim, not an independently measured battery test, and the preview does not state the conditions behind the estimate.

Can you still buy a Motorola DH01 or use an SD card with one?
The 2008 preview does not establish whether the DH01 reached retail, what it cost, or whether units are available today. Any second-hand listing would need to be verified as an authentic DH01 and checked for working condition; the historical report alone is not evidence of current availability.
The device was designed to store recordings on SD memory cards, but the preview gives no supported capacity or format details. If considering a card for a surviving unit, confirm compatibility with the device documentation or test a card before relying on it for recordings.
