A 2021 ChromiumOS development record supports the claim that a Chromebook project called Mushu was configured for AMD Vega 12 graphics—but it does not establish that an AMD dGPU Chromebook reached stores. Mushu is best understood as a historical development project, not a confirmed product you can buy.
What was the Mushu Chromebook?
On July 13, 2021, Chrome Unboxed reported that Mushu was a Chromebook under development, based on Google’s Hatch platform, with build configuration pointing to an AMD Vega 12 discrete GPU. The report also speculated about gaming and possible Steam support. Those possibilities were the author’s conjecture, not an announcement of product features. What the ChromiumOS configuration confirms
The public Mushu board overlay enables Radeon and AMDGPU support, includes Vega 12 firmware, and selects a 5.4 kernel. That is evidence that the software build configuration accounted for Vega 12 graphics. It is not proof of a finished device, final hardware specifications, or retail shipment.
Was an AMD dGPU Chromebook actually released?
The sources available for this story do not identify a Mushu retail model, launch date, or commercial availability. Chromium.org’s ChromeOS developer device information describes shipped systems—devices that came from the factory with Google ChromeOS—which is a different kind of evidence from a development board configuration. No benchmark or tested performance result is established either.

Which Mushu specifications are verified?
The configuration supports the Vega 12 firmware and driver claim, but it does not establish a finalized consumer product specification. The 2021 article also repeated leak-derived claims of 4 GB of high-speed memory and 1,024 compute cores, attributed secondhand; those figures should not be treated as independently verified AMD specifications or measured results. The available evidence does not establish a final CPU/GPU pairing, graphics power, clock speed, memory type, battery impact, price, or performance tier.
Can you buy or evaluate Mushu today?
No saleable Mushu model is identified in these sources, so there is no basis for a purchase recommendation or product comparison. If you are choosing an actual older Chromebook, Google advises checking the device’s “Update schedule” and Auto Update Expiration date because older devices eventually stop receiving updates. What about modifying a Chromebook for graphics?
The Mushu development configuration is not an upgrade guide. Chromium.org warns that modifications to ChromeOS devices are unsupported and may cause hardware, software, or security problems, or void the warranty. That general warning does not establish a modification route for Mushu.
