Yes—you can run .NET applications on a Raspberry Pi. Choose a .NET build that matches the Pi’s processor architecture and Raspberry Pi OS edition, then either install the .NET runtime on the Pi or publish the runtime together with your app.

What you need to know before installing .NET

Raspberry Pi OS is the free, Debian-based official operating system for Raspberry Pi computers. It is available in 32-bit and 64-bit editions, and Raspberry Pi documents the Pi 3, Pi 4, and Pi 5 as models with 64-bit processors. Check the board and OS edition before choosing a .NET download: the application, operating system, and .NET binaries must agree on architecture. Raspberry Pi’s operating-system documentation explains the editions and hardware distinction.

Microsoft publishes .NET SDK and runtime builds for Linux Arm64 and Arm32. For example, its .NET 8 download matrix lists both architectures. Select the version your application targets and the architecture matching the Pi’s OS; do not assume that every NuGet package, native library, or peripheral has a compatible ARM build. Microsoft’s .NET 8 download page lists the available builds and release information.

Choose Arm64 or Arm32

Choice When it fits What to check
64-bit Raspberry Pi OS and Linux Arm64 .NET Use on a Pi 3, 4, or 5 when the application and its dependencies support 64-bit Linux. Confirm the OS is the 64-bit edition and that any native dependencies offer compatible Arm64 binaries.
32-bit Raspberry Pi OS and Linux Arm32 .NET Use when older hardware or compatibility with existing 32-bit software is the priority. Confirm the application and its native dependencies support Arm32.

Raspberry Pi says ARMv8-A/AArch64 capability entered the product line with the Raspberry Pi 3 in 2016. A 64-bit-capable processor does not, by itself, mean a 64-bit OS is installed: the OS edition still determines which .NET architecture to use. Raspberry Pi’s 2016 announcement describes the Pi 3’s processor.

Install Raspberry Pi OS and the matching .NET tools

  1. Install Raspberry Pi OS. Use Raspberry Pi Imager and select the 32-bit or 64-bit edition appropriate for your board and application dependencies. Raspberry Pi recommends its own OS for most use cases and documents Imager as the installation method. See the Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
  2. Install the matching .NET SDK or runtime. Use Microsoft’s official Linux ARM downloads or installation instructions. Choose Arm64 for a 64-bit OS or Arm32 for a 32-bit OS, and select the .NET version your project requires. The SDK is needed to build applications on the Pi; a runtime is sufficient to run a framework-dependent application. Microsoft’s .NET 8 download matrix is one example of the architecture-specific choices.
  3. Create or test your project. You can develop on the Pi or on another computer. Raspberry Pi’s Build HAT example demonstrates creating a console project with dotnet new console. See the Build HAT .NET instructions.

Do not expect apt to install Microsoft’s .NET framework on Raspberry Pi OS. Raspberry Pi’s Build HAT documentation explicitly notes that Microsoft .NET is not available through apt on Raspberry Pi and directs users to Microsoft’s installation instructions.

Choose how the application will run on the Pi

Deployment type What you publish Trade-off
Framework-dependent The application and its dependencies; the matching .NET runtime must already be installed on the Pi. Usually a smaller application payload, but the target needs a separately installed runtime. Updating that runtime on the Pi can serve multiple applications that use it.
Self-contained The application plus the .NET runtime for the target architecture. The Pi does not need a separately installed .NET runtime for that application, but the published output is larger and includes a runtime to maintain with releases.

Microsoft says deployment to single-board computers follows the same general process as deployment to other platforms. The exact publish options and runtime identifier depend on the target architecture and project. Microsoft’s single-board-computer deployment guide covers the workflow.

Publish and copy the app to the Raspberry Pi

For a framework-dependent deployment, install the matching runtime on the Pi, publish the application for the target, and copy the published files to the Pi. Microsoft documents enabling SSH, transferring files with SCP, and starting the entry assembly with dotnet. For a self-contained deployment, publish for the target architecture and start the generated executable from the published files instead. Follow the deployment guide for the exact commands and options for your project. Microsoft’s deployment instructions include both approaches.

Before deploying, verify that the project’s target runtime identifier matches the Pi’s OS architecture. Also check any native libraries and device-specific dependencies: .NET’s ARM builds do not guarantee that third-party components will work on every model or OS release.

Check hardware and compatibility for your application

The Pi’s memory, storage, cooling, and power matter alongside CPU architecture. The appropriate capacity depends on the application, so there is no single model or configuration that fits every .NET workload. Test the complete application on the intended board when it depends on native code, attached hardware, or resource-intensive workloads.
