Yes—DARPA has tested AI flight algorithms in an F-16, but the story spans two different kinds of trials. The widely reported 5–0 AlphaDogfight result happened in simulation; later Air Combat Evolution (ACE) tests put AI algorithms aboard a modified F-16 test aircraft for live flights against a human-piloted F-16. Those flights were controlled tests, not evidence of a combat-ready, pilotless fighter.
What happened in the virtual dogfight trials?
DARPA’s AlphaDogfight Trials in August 2020 brought eight teams together to fly simulated F-16s in one-on-one dogfights. DARPA later reported that the winning AI beat an experienced F-16 pilot five times in five simulated engagements. How did ACE move from simulation to a real aircraft?
DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program advanced algorithms developed for simulated F-16 dogfights to flight testing aboard the X-62A, also known as VISTA. It is a specially modified two-seat F-16 test aircraft. Early flight tests took place in December 2022 and were reported in February 2023. A safety pilot was aboard and could take control if needed. The transition tested more than whether an AI could perform well in a virtual engagement: it put the algorithms into a real aircraft and exposed them to flight conditions. DARPA said the early flights used simulated adversaries and simulated weapons, and that some results differed from simulation. That makes the flights meaningful test evidence, but not a demonstration of live weapons use or combat effectiveness.

Did an AI dogfight a human pilot in the air?
DARPA announced on April 17, 2024, that ACE had conducted the first in-air tests of AI algorithms autonomously flying an F-16 against a human-piloted F-16 in within-visual-range scenarios. The demonstrations took place in 2023 and continued in 2024 at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California. DARPA’s April 2024 announcement
“Autonomously flying” describes the AI’s role in controlling the aircraft during the tests; it does not mean there was no human safety oversight. DARPA’s reports describe test flights, not an operational aircraft cleared to fly or fight without a pilot. The official material does not give a program-wide public score for the live ACE engagements, so the AlphaDogfight 5–0 result should not be treated as a live-flight win-loss record.

How are ACE and VENOM different?
ACE is DARPA’s autonomy program focused on building trust in autonomy and human-machine collaboration. Its program page describes a potential division of work in which a person handles broader command tasks while autonomy manages lower-level aircraft maneuvers; the page marks ACE complete. VENOM is a newer testbed activity, not another name for the AlphaDogfight simulator trials or the X-62A ACE demonstrations. In a July 16, 2026 update, DARPA reported AI-controlled in-air testing on VENOM-modified F-16s, with human pilots in the cockpit monitoring the AI. DARPA says the fleet will support future live-flight testing for the AIR program and research toward teams of autonomous aircraft. Could AI-controlled F-16s fly without a pilot?
The cited tests do not establish that. The ACE early flight report describes a safety pilot aboard, and DARPA’s 2026 VENOM update says pilots were in the cockpit monitoring the AI. DARPA’s stated direction is to develop trusted autonomy and human-machine collaboration, including a possible future role for autonomy in aircraft maneuvers while a human manages broader command tasks. These are test arrangements and program goals, not evidence of routine pilotless operations.
