In 2017, Rostec said the self-winding watch added to the Ratnik kit could keep operating through electromagnetic effects associated with a nuclear bomb. That claim does not mean Ratnik can protect its wearer from a nuclear blast.
What part of Ratnik is supposed to withstand nuclear effects?
A 100-gram, self-winding mechanical wristwatch. Live Science reported on 13 October 2017 that Rostec representatives described it as able to withstand destructive electromagnetic pulses and “even consequences of a nuclear blast.” Oleg Faustov, Rostec’s chief designer of life-support systems for tactical gear, said: “If a soldier is exposed to electromagnetic emission of a nuclear bomb, the watch will continue to operate without any interruption.”
The claim concerns the watch continuing to function amid electromagnetic effects. It is not a claim that the watch, the rest of Ratnik, or its wearer can survive a nuclear detonation. An electromagnetic pulse is not the same as the blast’s heat, pressure, radiation, or other hazards. Live Science’s report explicitly distinguished the watch claim from protection of the rest of the kit.
The reporting did not identify the exact watch model issued with Ratnik. Its 100-gram figure and nuclear-effects claim therefore should not be treated as a general specification for consumer mechanical watches—or as proof that another watch is nuclear-proof.

What is Ratnik, and what does its delivery record show?
Ratnik is a second-generation integrated combat-equipment system for the Russian army. Rostec said in December 2020 that nearly 300,000 sets had been delivered over eight years. It described the system as combining more than 60 elements; annual serial deliveries began in 2015 after troop trials.
The item count varies with the date and description: Live Science reported in 2017 that Rostec/TASS described Ratnik as containing 59 items, while Rostec’s 2020 account referred to more than 60 elements. Those dated figures do not establish that every set contained an identical inventory.

What is Sotnik supposed to add?
Sotnik, meaning “Centurion,” is the proposed third-generation successor to Ratnik. Rostec announced in June 2019 that development was planned for 2020 and that Sotnik was expected to replace Ratnik in 2025. Those dates were development plans, not confirmation that the successor entered full service on schedule.
- Protection and signature management: Rostec listed anti-mine or anti-blast boots, clothing intended to reduce infrared visibility, anti-radar camouflage, and an electrochromic “chameleon” material. These are proposed features, not proof of protection against a nuclear detonation.
- Digital equipment and drones: Janes described plans for projected commands and maps through protective goggles, links to micro-UAVs, communications, weapons, information, and food subsystems.
- Health monitoring: Janes reported planned quantum sensors to monitor a soldier’s health.
- Materials and fragment protection: Rostec said in January 2021 that Sotnik would use high-strength ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fiber. It described a higher protection class than Ratnik and a future target of stopping a fragment traveling up to 670 m/s, with special means to damp the impact. This is a stated target, not an independently verified performance result.

Was Sotnik in service by its announced 2025 target?
Rostec’s 2019 announcement set 2025 as the expected Ratnik replacement date, while Janes reported on the planned design and capabilities in 2019–2020. These sources describe a schedule and development goals; they do not confirm that full Sotnik fielding occurred in 2025. The announced weight, protection, sensing, camouflage, and drone features should therefore be read as targets or plans unless confirmed by later deployment evidence.

What the nuclear-resistance claim does—and does not—mean
The defensible reading is narrow: Rostec said a mechanical watch associated with Ratnik would continue operating despite nuclear electromagnetic effects. That statement offers no evidence that Ratnik is nuclear-proof, and Sotnik’s announced anti-blast footwear and other protection goals do not change what the watch claim means. Neither a component’s ability to keep working nor a combat kit’s conventional protective features establish that a soldier could survive a nuclear blast.
