After Dell completed its EMC acquisition on September 7, 2016, Virtustream and VMware sat in the same Dell Technologies portfolio—but they were not being merged. The distinction was in their approaches: Virtustream focused on managed cloud services for mission-critical enterprise applications, while VMware supplied virtualization software and enabled a wider cloud-provider ecosystem. Their roles could overlap in hybrid-cloud strategy and connect technically, but the 2016 reporting described separate businesses, not one combined service.

How did the two businesses fit into Dell Technologies?

Dell announced on September 7, 2016, that it had completed its acquisition of EMC. The company listed both Virtustream and VMware among the businesses in the broader Dell Technologies portfolio and presented hybrid cloud as one area the portfolio addressed. Dell described the combined company as a “$74 billion” market leader; that figure was Dell’s characterization in its announcement, not an independently established measure of market position. The next day, Data Center Knowledge asked how “VMware and Virtustream pieces fit into the overall puzzle?” Its report said Michael Dell ruled out a merger between Virtustream and VMware, including VMware’s public-cloud assets. The portfolio grouping therefore did not mean the two operations were being combined. Data Center Knowledge’s September 8, 2016 report

What was the difference between Virtustream and VMware’s hybrid-cloud roles?

Comparison Virtustream in the 2016 reporting VMware in the 2016 reporting
Approach Managed cloud services for enterprise customers. Virtualization software and technologies used in customer and service-provider cloud environments.
Workload emphasis Mission-critical enterprise applications, with SAP cited as an example. VMware-based virtualized workloads across a range of environments.
Cloud relationship Service provider managing application-focused workloads. Software and an ecosystem of providers and public-cloud connections.
Example named at the time xStream was described by EMC as a cloud management platform tightly integrated with VMware vSphere. The report discussed VMware’s Cross-Cloud Architecture and provider relationships, including the vCloud Air Network.

These are different approaches, not directly equivalent products. Virtustream sold a managed service proposition; VMware’s role centered on software that supported virtualized environments and cloud-provider offerings. These descriptions refer to the 2015–2016 sources and should not be read as statements about current products or organizational arrangements. Where did their strategies overlap?

The overlap was real, but it did not erase the difference in business models. The Data Center Knowledge report said Virtustream planned to integrate VMware NSX into its Enterprise Cloud platform. EMC’s earlier announcement also said Virtustream’s xStream platform was tightly integrated with VMware vSphere. Those connections show how VMware technology could support Virtustream’s service offering; they do not establish that the businesses had merged. VMware’s cloud strategy, as described in the 2016 report, emphasized connecting VMware-based environments with multiple clouds and working with service providers. VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger described the Cross-Cloud Architecture goal as “to embrace as many clouds as we can,” and said the company aimed to provide integrations to different clouds and help organizations build their own clouds using VMware technology. That wider ecosystem positioning could intersect with Virtustream’s managed services, even though their offerings were not the same.

What had been planned before the acquisition closed?

EMC announced in May 2015 that it would acquire Virtustream and make it EMC’s managed cloud services business. The announcement described Virtustream’s focus on migrating, running, and managing mission-critical enterprise applications, including SAP. EMC’s May 26, 2015 announcement

March 2016 transaction materials described Dell Technologies as a family of complementary and strategically aligned businesses. They named VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and Virtustream CEO Rodney Rogers among the business leaders in an executive group. That was planning context before the transaction closed, not proof of the businesses’ exact operating arrangements afterward. Dell transaction materials filed with the SEC

Was one company positioned to win hybrid cloud?

The 2016 sources establish distinct strategies and some technical connections, but they do not provide comparative market-share, revenue, customer-count, or performance figures that determine which approach was stronger. Data Center Knowledge included analyst views about market positioning; those are opinions reported at the time, not a quantitative verdict. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Dell’s portfolio included both businesses, their roles could complement or intersect, and Michael Dell said they would not be merged.
