KDiff3 is a graphical tool for comparing files or folders and merging changes. It can compare two or three text inputs, show differences down to individual characters, and provide an editable result for combining changes or resolving conflicts.
What is KDiff3 used for?
KDiff3 helps you inspect how text files or folders differ and combine changes when you need a merged version. It is useful for reviewing edits, comparing versions of a file, and working through a three-way merge where two changed copies must be reconciled against a common version.
The comparison view makes line and character differences visible. It can also show differences in spaces and tabs, which can matter in source code, configuration files, and other text where whitespace affects meaning. KDE documents options to highlight or hide whitespace and comments.
KDiff3 is not limited to displaying a visual diff: its merge window lets you edit the combined result. KDE says it can merge two or three inputs and automatically merge as much as possible. Automatic merging does not mean every conflict is resolved correctly without review; inspect the result before using it.

How do I compare three files in KDiff3?
A three-way comparison is useful when you have a common starting version and two separate versions that were edited independently. KDiff3 displays the three inputs in separate panes, shows where their contents differ, and provides an editable merge window for assembling the result.
- Open the three inputs. Load the files you want to compare in KDiff3. Use the common starting file and both edited copies when resolving changes made along separate branches.
- Review the comparison panes. Follow the displayed differences across the three inputs. Check line-level changes and inspect character-level or whitespace differences where they matter.
- Build the merge result. Use the merge window to choose or edit the content that should appear in the combined version. KDiff3 automatically merges as much as it can, but review areas where the inputs disagree.
- Check and save the result. Read through the merged text in context before saving or passing it to another tool. A visually completed merge is not a substitute for validating the file’s meaning or behavior.

Can KDiff3 resolve merge conflicts?
Yes. KDiff3 is designed to help resolve conflicts by comparing inputs and presenting an editable merge result. It can automatically combine non-conflicting changes, while leaving you to inspect and decide how to handle competing edits. Treat it as a conflict-resolution aid, not an assurance that every result is correct.
Whitespace handling is an important review choice: spaces and tabs can be shown, highlighted, or hidden depending on the available options. Hiding whitespace can reduce visual noise, but check it explicitly if indentation or spacing is meaningful in the files you are merging.

Where can I download KDiff3 for Windows, Linux, or Mac?
KDE lists Linux, Windows, and macOS as supported platforms. For Linux, KDE points users to Discover or another AppStream software center, or to their distribution’s package manager. KDE’s stable download directory is the place to check for current installers and source files. Its listing can change, so verify the platform and package filename shown there rather than relying on an older download guide.

There is a small version-display discrepancy in KDE’s current pages: when checked, the download directory contained KDiff3 1.12.6 source and Flatpak artifacts dated July 22 and August 18, 2026, as well as macOS ARM and x86_64 packages dated August 18, 2026; the KDE Applications page displayed release 1.12.5 dated July 20, 2026. Artifact timestamps do not establish a formal release date. Check the directory and the KDE Applications KDiff3 page for the latest platform-specific availability; the directory listing checked did not establish an exact current Windows installer filename.

KDE identifies KDiff3’s license as GPL-2.0-or-later. Its source code is available through the KDE KDiff3 repository. The project README describes it as software for comparing and merging two or three input files or directories.
