Chromebooks already have a time-lapse mode in the built-in Camera app. Open Camera, choose Video, then select Time Lapse to record; the app automatically speeds up the footage into a 15- to 30-second clip.
How to make a time-lapse on a Chromebook
- Open the Chromebook’s built-in Camera app.
- Select Video, then choose Time Lapse.
- Frame the scene and start recording. The app speeds up the recording automatically; stop when you have captured the event you want.
Google’s example in its Chromebook Camera instructions is a 100-second recording accelerated 4x to produce a 25-second video. That is an illustration of the feature, not a guarantee that every recording will use that exact speed.
How long can you record, and how long is the finished clip?
Google says the finished time-lapse video is between 15 and 30 seconds. The ChromeOS 117 release notes say recording can continue while storage remains available, so there is no documented fixed maximum recording time independent of your Chromebook’s available storage.
- For a longer recording: check that the Chromebook has enough free storage for the session.
- For a long session: Google recommends connecting the Chromebook to power for best results. Its instructions do not specify a maximum battery runtime.
Do you need an external camera?
No. Time-lapse is a mode in the built-in Camera app; Google’s instructions do not require buying a webcam or other accessory. If you connect an external camera—or your Chromebook has two built-in cameras—you can switch cameras in the app for a different view. Camera controls vary by hardware: Google notes that pan, tilt, and zoom may be unavailable when a camera does not support them.

Is Chromebook time-lapse new?
No. Google documented time-lapse recording among the ChromeOS 117 features in 2023; ChromeOS 117 reached stable release on September 18, 2023, according to ChromeOS.dev’s release notes. Google’s Chrome 117 release notes also document the storage condition. The feature is established, rather than a newly arriving 2026 capability.
