Before you move your data or buy accessories, confirm the phone is really a OnePlus 3T, inspect its condition, and make sure it can charge. Then connect it to Wi-Fi and transfer your data during Android setup—before erasing or trading in your old phone. Finish by checking the 3T’s update screen, setting a strong screen lock, and enabling Google backup and Play Protect.
1. Confirm the model and inspect the phone
Open Settings > About phone and check that the model is listed as OnePlus 3T. This matters before you order a case or screen protector: do not assume accessories advertised for the OnePlus 3 also fit the 3T without checking their dimensions and cutouts.
OnePlus lists the 3T as measuring 152.7 × 74.7 × 7.35 mm and weighing 158 g. It has a 5.5-inch, 1920 × 1080 Optic AMOLED display, a USB 2.0 Type-C port, dual nano-SIM support, and a non-removable 3,400 mAh battery. OnePlus’s specifications can help you verify what to expect.
- Check the display for cracks, dead areas, or discoloration.
- Test the buttons and alert slider, and inspect the SIM tray and USB-C port for visible damage or debris.
- Watch how the battery behaves while charging and during ordinary use. A used phone’s battery condition cannot be inferred from its original capacity rating.
- Check whether the Dash power adapter and Type-C cable are included and undamaged.
2. Charge it with suitable hardware
The OnePlus 3T uses USB-C and supports OnePlus Dash Charge at 5V/4A. Its manual lists a Dash power adapter and Dash Type-C cable as in-box accessories. If either is missing or damaged, look for a cable and adapter explicitly compatible with Dash Charge; a USB-C connector alone does not establish Dash compatibility. OnePlus’s published specifications are at oneplus.com/3t/specs.

OnePlus said at launch that Dash Charge could provide “a day’s power in half an hour of charging,” including during activities such as streaming video, gaming, or GPS navigation. That was a launch claim, not a promise about a 3T with an aged battery or an unknown third-party charger. The 2016 launch announcement describes the claim.
3. Set up Wi-Fi and transfer your data
Connect the 3T to Wi-Fi, add the Google Account you plan to use, and follow the setup wizard. Google recommends charging both phones and having an internet connection available before you start. Do not wipe, reset, or hand over the old phone until you have checked the new one and confirmed that the items you need arrived.
Choose cable transfer or Wi-Fi
Android setup supports transferring data by cable or wirelessly. Use the on-screen transfer instructions and choose the path that your devices and available accessories support. A cable requires a suitable connection between the phones; Wi-Fi avoids that cable but still requires an internet connection for setup. Google’s Android data-transfer instructions explain the process.

Transfer can include apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages, many settings, wallpaper, and call history. It is not a guarantee that every file or app state will move. Downloads, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts, and some settings may not copy. WhatsApp restoration depends on having a backup enabled on the old device.
Restore a Google backup or start fresh
If Android offers a Google backup from your previous phone, select it during setup to restore the supported data in that backup. Starting fresh avoids restoring that backup, but does not itself transfer your old phone’s content; use the setup transfer option or restore a backup if you want those items on the 3T. Google explains what its device backup can contain at Back up or restore data on your Android device.
4. Secure the phone and enable backup
Once setup is complete, use a PIN, pattern, or password for the screen lock. Google advises using one of these rather than swipe or Smart Lock to protect backed-up data. Review the Google account shown in Settings so you know which account the phone is using for backup.

Google backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS, though what is available varies by device and app. Check the backup setting on the phone rather than assuming it is active. Keep Google Play Protect enabled: Google says it checks apps from Google Play and other sources, warns about harmful apps, and may deactivate or remove them. See Google Play Protect.

The OnePlus 3T launched in 2016 with OxygenOS based on Android Nougat. OnePlus described OxygenOS features including app locking, gesture controls, Shelf, themes, icon packs, and expanded screenshots; available features depend on the software installed on a particular phone. The launch announcement and specifications page provide historical product information, not a current patch guarantee.
On the handset, open Settings > About phone and look for System update (the exact labels can vary by installed software). Record the version and update information the phone reports, and install an offered update only after the phone is charged and your important data is backed up. The official information cited here does not establish one current security-patch date or guaranteed support end date that applies to every region and installation history, so use the device’s own update screen rather than assuming it is current.
6. Choose accessories after confirming fit
A case and screen protector can help protect a 3T, but confirm the product is specifically compatible with the OnePlus 3T. Compare camera and port openings, button and alert-slider access, screen coverage, and whether the protector fits with the case. The most useful replacement charging accessory, if needed, is a model-compatible Dash USB-C cable; generic USB-C compatibility alone does not promise Dash Charge performance.
