Wear OS 5.1 is based on Android 15 (API level 35) and is now available on select watches and in the official Android Studio emulator—not just in a developer preview. Google’s documented highlights are Credential Manager support and the option to play media through a supported watch’s speaker when an app integrates with Wear Output Switcher. Availability and behavior depend on the watch and the app.

What’s new in Wear OS 5.1?

Google’s Wear OS 5.1 documentation highlights two capabilities. They are platform features for developers to build on, not guarantees that every watch or app will expose them.

Credential Manager support

Credential Manager provides a unified sign-in approach for passwords, passkeys, and federated identity services such as Sign In with Google. A credential provider can store credentials and synchronize account information across devices. The practical benefit depends on apps integrating the APIs and users having a compatible credential provider and account setup.

Media playback through the watch speaker

On watches with supported hardware, users can select the watch speaker as a preferred media output when an app integrates with Wear Output Switcher. This does not mean every Wear OS 5.1 watch has a speaker suitable for media playback, or that every media app offers the option.

Which watches can run Wear OS 5.1?

The current Android Developers guide lists the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 2, and original Pixel Watch as devices that can run Wear OS 5.1. It also provides Wear OS 5.1 system images for the official Android Studio emulator. This is a list of documented devices and test options, not a claim that all Wear OS watches receive the update.

The rollout to Pixel Watch models took place in March 2025. Google’s guide lists these dates:

What developers should check when moving to API 35

Wear OS 5.1 uses API level 35. Google advises developers with apps that target API 34 to test on Wear OS 5 and update their compile and target SDK settings to API 35 as appropriate. Updating the target SDK can expose Android 15 behavior changes, so verify the app’s actual flows rather than assuming a successful build means it behaves correctly. Google’s guidance is: “Check that your app runs as expected after you update your target SDK version.”

Testing on a watch or in the emulator

The official guide describes testing with Android Studio Ladybug Feature Drop or later and Wear OS 5.1 system images for ARM 64 and Intel x86_64. Use a listed Pixel Watch model for hardware testing, or create an emulator with the matching Wear OS 5.1 image to check app behavior without a physical watch.

Google lists several known issues with the documented system image. These are specific warnings in the guide, not a complete account of every problem users might encounter:

  • Wear Health Services may sometimes fail to start an exercise.
  • Some apps targeting API 35 can encounter a SecurityException when accessing specified Wear libraries unless they use the documented library versions.

If a failure matches one of these cases, compare your setup and dependencies with the current Android Developers guidance before treating it as an app regression.

How Wear OS 5.1 fits into the Wear OS update story

Google announced in May 2024 that the Wear OS user base had grown 40% in 2023 and that Wear OS reached more than 160 countries and regions. Those are Google-reported figures, not independently audited measurements in the announcement. Google also reported up to 20% less power use during an outdoor marathon compared with watches running Wear OS 4; that was based on internal testing on select Wear OS devices, with results varying by device and individual use. It describes a Wear OS 5-era claim, not a measured Wear OS 5.1 result. See Google’s May 15, 2024 Wear OS announcement.
