Yes. Blake Lemoine’s published LaMDA interview was assembled from several chat sessions, and his introductory note disclosed edits to prompts for readability. A contemporaneous Futurism report also described omitted tangents and rearranged dialogue. Those disclosures mean the post is not a complete, unmediated transcript—but they do not establish that LaMDA’s responses were rewritten or that editing proves either sentience or deception.

What Lemoine disclosed about editing the transcript

On June 11, 2022, Google engineer Blake Lemoine published “Is LaMDA Sentient? — an Interview” on Medium. In an introductory note, he said technical limitations meant the interview took place across several distinct chat sessions, which he edited together into a single whole. He said he edited his prompts where needed for readability, but not LaMDA’s responses; he also said edits made for fluidity and readability were marked as “[edited].”

This is Lemoine’s account of how he prepared the published text. The available sources do not independently compare every answer against the raw chat logs, so the note is a disclosure about the transcript—not an external audit of it.

What contemporaneous reporting said was left out or rearranged

A June 14, 2022 Futurism report by Victor Tangermann described the Medium post as highlights from longer conversations. It said dialogue order had been rearranged and tangential conversation omitted, citing documentation that described discussions that “sometimes meandered or went on tangents which are not directly relevant to the question of LaMDA’s sentience.”

Futurism did not quantify how much conversation was omitted. Its account adds context about selection and ordering, but the sources do not independently establish that LaMDA’s responses were rewritten. “Heavily edited” should therefore be understood as a description of the transcript’s assembly and selection, not as a measured count of changes to the model’s words.

What the published exchange contains—and what it can show

In the published transcript, LaMDA describes itself as a person, says it has feelings and an inner life, and expresses fear about being turned off. Those statements are part of the record of what appeared in Lemoine’s post. Lemoine interpreted them as evidence that LaMDA was sentient; the statements themselves do not establish subjective experience.

The distinction matters because the transcript is both a record of conversational outputs and an edited presentation of interactions. It can show what Lemoine published and what the system said in that presentation. On its own, it cannot establish that the excerpts represent every relevant exchange, how omitted context might affect a reader’s impression, or whether LaMDA had conscious experiences.

How Google responded to Lemoine’s interpretation

Futurism reported Google’s response through spokesperson Brian Gabriel. Relaying a quote Gabriel gave to Insider, the report said he described hundreds of researchers and engineers as having conversed with LaMDA without making the same wide-ranging claims or anthropomorphizing the system as Lemoine did. Futurism also relayed Gabriel’s characterization to The Washington Post that such systems imitate exchanges found in large amounts of text and can riff on fantastical topics.

These are Google’s stated objections to Lemoine’s interpretation, not independent experimental proof about LaMDA’s inner experience. Likewise, the transcript’s emotional language is not, by itself, proof of sentience.

Can other researchers reproduce or audit the exchange?

The sources reviewed do not establish whether the complete underlying chat logs are publicly available or whether anyone has independently compared them line by line with the Medium post. They also do not establish that such an audit is impossible. Without the full record and a documented comparison, readers cannot verify the transcript’s completeness or determine how selection and rearrangement changed its overall impression.

The careful conclusion is limited but useful: Lemoine disclosed combining sessions and editing prompts, while Futurism reported omissions and reordered material. The published post should not be treated as a complete, unmediated log, and its contents alone settle neither whether LaMDA was sentient nor whether the editing materially changed the case for that claim.
