If docker pull remains on Extracting, Docker has moved beyond downloading that layer and is working to unpack or register it in the local image store. Check daemon logs and the storage location’s available space before retrying or changing Docker’s storage configuration; the right fix depends on the error and whether you use Docker Desktop, Linux, rootless mode, or the containerd image store.
What “Extracting” means during a Docker pull
Docker pulls an image as a set of layers. The daemon downloads layers concurrently—three at a time by default according to the Docker image pull reference—then stores and extracts them locally. A layer that remains on “Extracting” points to local unpacking or registration, not necessarily a stalled download. Repeatedly cancelling and restarting can interrupt that work without revealing the cause.
Docker notes that a lost connection between the client and daemon, or manually terminating the command, ends a pull operation. If the pull stops rather than merely taking a long time, check the daemon’s connectivity and logs as well as local storage.
Collect evidence before changing Docker
- Check that the daemon responds and note its storage mode. Run
docker info. Docker recommends this as an operating-system-independent health check. Record the storage driver or image-store details it reports. - Read the daemon logs while reproducing the issue. Use the location for your platform listed in the next section. Look for messages about unpacking, layer registration, mounts, permissions, or storage errors.
- Check capacity where Docker stores data. On Linux, the data root is usually
/var/lib/docker, unless configured otherwise. Check both free bytes and free inodes on the filesystem that contains it. Image layers, metadata, and container log files all use storage, as described in Docker’s storage documentation. - Identify the environment and image store. Distinguish Linux from Docker Desktop, rootless from rootful operation, and legacy storage drivers from the containerd image store. These differences affect log locations, permissions, and space requirements.
- Check daemon proxy and registry reachability. Pulls depend on the daemon’s network path to the registry. Verify the daemon’s proxy configuration and registry connectivity if logs point to a connection problem.
- Validate configuration before editing it. If logs suggest a daemon configuration problem, validate
daemon.jsonbefore changing storage settings. Docker warns that invalid JSON can prevent the daemon from starting.
Find the right daemon log for your platform

Match the symptom to the likely cause
Logs or checks show low disk space or exhausted inodes
Docker needs writable space in its data root to extract and register layers. Free space alone is not the whole picture: a filesystem can have bytes available but run short of inodes, which can also prevent new files from being created. Check the filesystem that actually holds Docker’s data root, not just the host’s main disk.
If you use the containerd image store, allow for additional temporary space. Docker states that it uses more disk space than legacy storage drivers for the same images; compressed layers can remain while extracted copies are created. After confirming the constraint, free space through a cleanup process appropriate to your environment rather than deleting Docker’s data directories manually.

Logs report mount, filesystem, or storage-driver errors
Run docker info and compare its reported storage driver or image-store mode with the error in the daemon log. For overlay2, compatibility depends on kernel and filesystem features. A stuck extraction by itself does not establish that overlay2 is broken, and switching drivers without evidence can make existing local images unavailable or require them to be recreated. Consult Docker’s storage-driver documentation before changing the configuration.
Logs report a permission or unpack failure in rootless mode
Rootless Docker has different storage and permission constraints from a rootful daemon. Check the log’s specific permission or no-space error, the filesystem available to the rootless data store, and the storage mode shown by docker info. Do not assume that a rootful fix—such as changing system-wide storage configuration—applies to a rootless daemon. The pull ends or logs show a connection problem
Check whether the daemon—not just the interactive client—can reach the registry through the configured proxy. Docker documents daemon proxy configuration in its proxy documentation. A connection loss can terminate the pull, so resolve the network or proxy issue before treating the layer store as the cause.
The log points to daemon configuration
Validate the JSON syntax in daemon.json before restarting or changing storage settings. Keep a backup of the current configuration and export images you need before a storage-driver migration. A configuration mistake can prevent the daemon from starting, while a driver change can affect access to locally stored images.

Why cancelling and retrying is not the first fix
A pull is performed by the daemon, and Docker says that manually terminating the command or losing the client-to-daemon connection terminates the pull operation. If extraction appears slow, first inspect logs and storage capacity. Retry after addressing a concrete issue—such as insufficient space or a corrected proxy setting—rather than repeatedly interrupting the same operation.

- The full

- The daemon log entries from the time of the attempt.
- Free bytes and inodes on the filesystem containing Docker’s data root.
- Whether Docker is rootless or rootful, and whether it uses a legacy driver or the containerd image store.
- Any proxy or registry configuration relevant to daemon connectivity, with credentials redacted.
This evidence helps distinguish a space constraint from a storage compatibility, permissions, daemon, or network failure. The status alone does not identify one universal fix.
