It is built for demanding GPU-heavy work, not easy travel: WIRED’s review measured the machine at 8 pounds and reported around four hours of battery life in the reviewer’s use. Kubuntu Focus now promotes the refreshed Zr GEN 2, so check the generation carefully when comparing prices or availability.
What is the Kubuntu Focus Zr GEN 1?
The Zr GEN 1 is a large, performance-focused Linux mobile workstation. Kubuntu Focus announced it as immediately available on August 7, 2025, with an 18-inch 2560×1600 display, an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, and a choice of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 laptop GPU. The launch announcement also specified configurations with up to 192 GB of memory and four NVMe slots supporting up to 16 TB of storage. Kubuntu Focus launch announcement
Those are configuration ceilings from the manufacturer’s launch release, not the specification of every unit. WIRED’s review configuration had 32 GB of RAM, expandable to 192 GB, and 1 TB plus 2 TB SSDs. Its RTX 5090 option included 24 GB of GDDR7 memory. WIRED’s Zr GEN 1 review
What does the RTX 5090 configuration offer?
The RTX 5090 is the higher-tier graphics option, with 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM in the configuration described by WIRED. That makes the machine relevant for work that can benefit from substantial GPU resources, including machine learning, local large language models, data-heavy workflows, and high-end video editing. Scott Gilbertson of WIRED reported particularly responsive DaVinci Resolve performance in his use; that is a reviewer’s experience rather than a guarantee for every project or software setup. Display and external-screen support
WIRED describes an 18-inch, 2560×1600 matte display with a 240 Hz refresh rate and support for up to four external displays. The large high-refresh screen may suit a workstation that often stays on a desk, while the size contributes to the system’s limited portability. WIRED review

How portable is the Zr GEN 1?
It is heavy for a laptop. WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson measured it at about 15 by 12 inches, more than an inch thick, and 8 pounds. He reported averaging around four hours of battery life in his own use and said carrying it would call for a backpack. These are one reviewer’s measurements and experience, not standardized results for every workload. WIRED review
The reviewer also noted that the discrete GPU can be turned off in favor of integrated graphics to extend battery life. That can help when away from an outlet, but it gives up the discrete GPU for the time it is disabled. WIRED review

How much did the RTX 5090 model cost?
WIRED listed its reviewed RTX 5090 configuration at $4,395 from Kubuntu Focus in its February 25, 2026 review. Treat that as a dated, review-time price, not a confirmed current quote for GEN 1. The manufacturer’s current Zr product page is for GEN 2 and also shows a $4,395 starting price; that price should not be mistaken for a current GEN 1 offer. Confirm the generation, configuration, seller, stock, and price before buying. WIRED review · Kubuntu Focus Zr GEN 2 product page

Kubuntu Focus’s July 2026 news page describes the refreshed Zr GEN 2 with an Intel 290HX Plus processor and RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 options. The GEN 2 product page specifies Kubuntu 26.04 LTS and KDE Plasma 6.6 LTS. Those are GEN 2 details and should not be assumed to apply to GEN 1.
