The phone widely rumored as the iPhone SE 4 became the iPhone 16e: Apple announced it on February 19, 2025, and said it would be available February 28. The announcement confirmed several major predictions, including a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, USB-C, an A18 chip, a 48MP camera, and Apple’s C1 modem. “iPhone SE 4” was a prelaunch name, not the released product’s official name.
When did the iPhone SE 4 launch?
Apple announced the device on February 19, 2025, under the name iPhone 16e. It became available on February 28, 2025. That settles the launch-date question: this is a retrospective look at rumors that circulated before those dates, not a live launch watch. Apple’s announcement set the availability date, and the Associated Press also reported that preorders began that Friday ahead of retail availability.
Was the iPhone SE 4 called iPhone 16e?
Yes. Apple named the released phone iPhone 16e and presented it as a member of the iPhone 16 family. Before the announcement, the name was uncertain: MacRumors’ February 13 roundup said the possible iPhone 16E name had not been confirmed by a reliable source, while 9to5Mac’s February 16 article treated it as speculation. Those reports describe what people expected at the time; Apple’s announcement establishes the final name.
Which iPhone SE 4 rumors came true?
Many of the prominent hardware predictions in the days before launch matched the announced iPhone 16e. The distinction is that they remained rumors until Apple confirmed them.

The clearest answer is that the rumors described a forthcoming, more modern SE-style iPhone, but Apple released it as iPhone 16e. The name prediction remained unsettled in the final days before launch; the expected display, biometric design, camera, chip, modem and USB-C features were largely borne out by the official announcement. Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, described it at launch as “a powerful, more affordable option” within the lineup—a characterization to read alongside the higher US starting price than the previous SE.
