To add Dropbox to a Chromebook’s Files app, install and sign in to the Dropbox Android app, then open Files > Account > Dropbox. Dropbox’s instructions, updated March 6, 2026, specify that you must be using ChromeOS and be logged in to Dropbox for Android on the Chromebook.
Set up Dropbox in the Chromebook Files app
- Check that Android apps are available. Your Chromebook must support the Google Play Store and Android apps.
- Install and sign in to Dropbox. Open the Google Play Store, install the Dropbox Android app if needed, and sign in to your account.
- Open the Files app. Use the launcher or shelf to open ChromeOS Files.
- Choose Account, then Dropbox. In Files, click Account and select the Dropbox folder. If work and personal Dropbox accounts are linked on the Chromebook, Dropbox says both folders can appear.
These are Dropbox’s current Chromebook-specific steps: Add Dropbox to the Files app on your Chromebook.
What you can do in Dropbox from Files
The integration supports common file-management tasks without making the Files app a full replacement for Dropbox. You can browse files, choose between linked accounts, add files, sort by name, modified time, size, or type, delete files, export or download items, create folders, and preview supported files. Dropbox describes these capabilities in its Chromebook Files integration instructions.
What the Files integration does not support
- Shared-folder administration: You cannot manage shared-folder sharing settings in Files.
- Dropbox search and comments: Searching within the Dropbox folder and using comments are unavailable there.
- Recovering deleted items: You cannot recover files through Dropbox’s Recently Deleted menu from Files.
- Offline access: Dropbox content in Files is not available for offline access through this integration.
- Live simultaneous editing: Concurrent edits can result in conflicted copies.
- Some move destinations: A folder may not appear as a destination until you open it first.
Dropbox recommends using its Android app for features that are missing from Files. Also, if a passcode is set up for the Dropbox app, Dropbox says its folder will not be available in Files. See Dropbox’s feature and limitation details.

Fix a missing Dropbox folder
Confirm Dropbox is installed and signed in
Open the Dropbox Android app on the Chromebook and check that you are signed in. Then reopen Files and look under Account for Dropbox.
Check whether the app was removed or protected by a passcode
Uninstalling the Dropbox Android app removes the Dropbox folder from Files. Dropbox also says the folder is unavailable in Files while an app passcode is set up. Reinstall or sign in to Dropbox as appropriate, and review the app’s passcode setting if the folder remains missing. Dropbox documents both behaviors in its Chromebook integration help.

On a work or school Chromebook
Some features or files may not work on managed Chromebooks. Google advises contacting your administrator if you run into a restriction; that general guidance does not establish a Dropbox-specific policy requirement. See Google’s Chromebook file guidance.
Why there may be no “Add new service” option
Do not rely on an older guide that tells you to install a separate “File System for Dropbox” Chrome app, or assume that a generic Add new service menu is required. Google’s general Files guidance covers SMB shares and third-party file-system Android apps, so available service options can vary. Dropbox’s current Dropbox-specific route is to sign in to its Android app and open Files > Account > Dropbox. See Dropbox’s current setup instructions and Google’s general Files guidance.

Choose Files or the Dropbox app
Use the Files integration when you want Dropbox alongside local and other cloud files for routine browsing and file actions. Open the Dropbox Android app when you need the Dropbox features that Files does not provide, such as search, comments, deleted-file recovery, offline access, or shared-folder settings. Dropbox identifies its Android app as the alternative for features unavailable in Files: Dropbox Chromebook integration help.
