The engine was Unreal Engine 5, and the footage came from Epic Games’ real-time technology demo, Lumen in the Land of Nanite. Epic said the demo ran on PlayStation 5. Its striking visuals showcased two systems—Nanite for highly detailed geometry and Lumen for dynamic lighting—but they were a demonstration of Epic’s goals for the engine, not proof that every Unreal Engine 5 game looks like real life.
What game engine was shown?
The title refers to Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), Epic Games’ game engine. Futurism’s article was published on May 13, 2020, after Epic offered a first look at the engine. The showcase was not a standalone retail game: it was a technology demo called Lumen in the Land of Nanite. Epic’s June 15, 2020 announcement said the demo ran in real time on PlayStation 5. That identifies the platform used for the demo; it does not mean the video can only be watched on that console.
What made the demo look so detailed?
Epic highlighted two technologies with different jobs. Nanite handles detailed geometry; Lumen handles lighting. Epic described what these systems were designed to do, rather than publishing an independent benchmark of how closely the demo matched film CGI or reality.
Nanite: highly detailed geometry
Nanite is Epic’s virtualized micropolygon geometry system. Epic said it lets artists bring in detailed source assets—such as ZBrush sculpts, photogrammetry scans, and CAD data—and stream and scale that geometry in real time. The company described source art containing “hundreds of millions or billions of polygons”; that figure refers to the scale of assets it said could be imported, not a measured polygon count for the demo’s scene.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lumen: lighting that responds to the scene
Lumen is Epic’s dynamic global illumination system. In Epic’s description, it responds to changes in the scene and lighting, handling diffuse interreflection and indirect specular reflections across large environments and fine detail. In practical terms, the demo used it to show lighting that could adapt as conditions changed rather than relying only on lighting baked into the scene.
Other systems contributed, too
The demo also used engine features beyond Nanite and Lumen: Epic listed Chaos physics and destruction, Niagara visual effects, convolution reverb, and ambisonics rendering. The showcase was therefore a presentation of several systems working together, not a visual result attributable to a single feature.

Did Unreal Engine 5 make games indistinguishable from reality?
No such conclusion follows from the demo. Epic described photorealism as a goal: “One of our goals in this next generation is to achieve photorealism on par with movie CG and real life, and put it within practical reach of development teams of all sizes through highly productive tools and content libraries.” That is Epic Games’ statement of intent, not an independently verified result. The available sources do not establish a neutral visual-quality comparison between the demo and movie CGI or real life, nor do they show that all games made with UE5 achieve the same appearance.
A technology demo is designed to showcase what an engine can do under particular conditions. The look of a finished game also depends on its assets, art direction, lighting choices, performance targets, and development resources. The reveal is best read as an illustration of UE5’s potential, not a guarantee about every game built with it.

What was announced in 2020—and what is current?
Some details in the original reveal were plans, not timeless guidance. Epic’s 2020 post discussed a planned preview, support across consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, and a royalty arrangement that waived royalties on the first $1 million in game revenue under the terms announced then. Those statements belong to that announcement period. They should not be treated as a current platform checklist or current licensing advice.
For licensing today, Epic’s licensing information and current engine overview distinguish royalty-based games or applications from seat-based commercial use cases. Check Epic’s current terms for the project and use in question rather than relying on the 2020 announcement.

UE5’s status in 2026
Epic announced Unreal Engine 5.8 on June 23, 2026, calling it the last planned major UE5 release on its roadmap as the company ramps up work on UE6. At State of Unreal 2026, Epic targeted UE6 Early Access for the end of 2027. That is a target, not a guaranteed release date.
