First identify whether you’re connecting by USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless: the fix depends on the method, and not every Xbox One controller revision supports Bluetooth. Try a known data-capable USB cable that fits your controller. If Windows recognizes the controller over USB, focus on the wireless connection; if it does not, check the cable, USB port, controller power, and Windows device recognition first.
1. Identify how you’re connecting
Microsoft lists USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless as ways to connect an Xbox controller to a PC. Which are available depends on the controller revision and the PC’s capabilities. See Microsoft’s PC connection guide for the connection options.
- USB: A cable with the correct connector can connect the controller and help determine whether the problem is limited to wireless.
- Bluetooth: Both the controller and PC must support Bluetooth, and the PC’s Bluetooth must be working.
- Xbox Wireless: This is a separate wireless route. Confirm that the exact controller and any adapter you intend to use are compatible.
2. Test the controller over USB
Use a known data-capable cable that matches the port on your controller; a cable that only charges devices may not establish a data connection. Connect it directly to a working PC USB port, then check whether Windows recognizes the controller. Do not assume every Xbox One controller uses the same connector.
- If Windows recognizes it, the controller can connect over USB; troubleshoot Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless separately.
- If it does not, try another known-working USB port and data-capable cable, and make sure the controller has power. Check whether Windows detects any device when you connect it.
3. Fix Bluetooth pairing and reconnection
For a Bluetooth connection, start with the controller and PC before changing drivers. Microsoft identifies pairing mode, distance, low battery, drivers, services, and updates as possible causes of Bluetooth connection problems.

- Make sure the controller has sufficient battery and is close to the PC.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode, then try adding or reconnecting it from Windows Bluetooth settings.
- On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- If pairing still fails, follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooting.
If Windows can discover the controller but cannot complete pairing, discovery alone does not establish that the connection is healthy; continue with the PC Bluetooth checks rather than assuming the controller is incompatible.
4. Check the PC’s Bluetooth driver and service
An outdated or incompatible Bluetooth driver can prevent devices from connecting. Microsoft’s general Bluetooth troubleshooting guide covers further checks, including driver-related problems. If a driver update is needed, use Windows Update or the PC maker’s guidance for your specific computer. Avoid undocumented Device Manager changes.

5. Consider controller firmware and other wireless options
Controller firmware
Microsoft says updating controller firmware may help with connection problems. Check current instructions in the Xbox Accessories app or official Xbox Support for your controller model. The available guidance does not establish that every Xbox One controller supports the same PC firmware-update process, so confirm model-specific steps rather than assuming.
Xbox Wireless
If Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable, Xbox Wireless may be an alternative when supported by your controller and PC setup. Microsoft has documented an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, but that older documentation does not confirm current retail availability or compatibility with every Xbox One controller. Verify the exact controller revision and the current adapter product details before buying one.

6. Note which Windows version you use
Microsoft’s PC connection guide specifies Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later for Bluetooth use. For Windows 11, the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter is the recommended starting point. Microsoft says free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025; menu labels and support options can differ by Windows version.
