The Surface Type Cover 2 is a slim keyboard cover for the Surface Pro 2, with backlit keys and a trackpad. It remains most straightforward to consider as a legacy accessory for that device: Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance does not specify Type Cover 2 fit across Surface generations, and today’s used listings vary. A 2014 reviewer liked its improved drag-and-drop support but reported trackpad shortcomings that matter if you expect a modern laptop-like experience.
What the Type Cover 2 is—and what it is not
Microsoft announced Type Cover 2 in September 2013 as an updated keyboard cover that retained the original Type Cover’s slim, lightweight design and added backlit keys. The announcement named Cyan, Magenta, Purple, and Black as colors planned for the following months. Those are launch-era details, not evidence of current availability. Microsoft’s announcement describes the product.
Microsoft describes Type Covers as both keyboards and protective covers. The Surface Pro 2 has a cover port and a two-position kickstand; Microsoft says one position suits desk typing and the other lap typing. Do not confuse Type Cover 2 with the separately announced Power Cover. Microsoft described the Power Cover as having a built-in battery; the Type Cover 2 announcement identifies backlit keys but does not identify a built-in battery. Microsoft’s 2013 announcement treats them as distinct accessories.

How well did its keyboard and trackpad work?
TIME reviewer Harry McCracken’s 2014 review is a historical account, not a current hands-on test. He said double-tap-and-drag support made drag-and-drop much better for his use. He also found two-finger scrolling inconsistent across apps and reported a dead zone near the trackpad’s top edge, reducing an already small usable area. These observations reflect his experience and the software context at the time; they should not be read as a measured score or a guarantee of how a particular used unit performs today. Will Type Cover 2 work with your Surface?
For a Surface Pro 2, the Type Cover’s intended role is clear: it attaches at the device’s cover port. For other Surface models, do not assume fit based only on the family name. Microsoft’s current keyboard guidance says Surface Pro Type Covers are compatible with Surface Pro 7+ and earlier models, and advises checking the compatibility details for each product, but it does not provide a model-by-model compatibility table for Type Cover 2. Confirm the exact keyboard and Surface model before buying, especially for a later-generation device. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance is the reference point.

Is Type Cover 2 still worth using?
It may suit someone who owns a Surface Pro 2, wants a keyboard that also covers the screen, and can find a functioning unit at an acceptable price. Backlit keys are a stated feature, and the cover connects through the Pro 2’s cover port. The historical review’s trackpad complaints are worth weighing if scrolling and precise pointer work are central to your use. No current inventory, prices, or used-item condition are established here, so value depends on the specific listing and the unit you receive.

- Confirm the model. Make sure the listing is specifically for Type Cover 2, not the original Type Cover, Touch Cover, or Power Cover.
- Verify device fit. Check compatibility against your exact Surface model rather than relying on a broad “Surface Pro” description.
- Inspect the connector and input surfaces. Ask for clear photos or details of the physical connector, keys, backlighting, and trackpad; look for damage or signs of wear.
- Check return terms. Prefer a seller who explains the return window and what happens if the cover does not connect or has undisclosed faults.
Because this is a legacy accessory, availability and condition are marketplace questions. A product mention or search result is not confirmation of stock, listing accuracy, or seller reliability.
