The steps depend on where the information is exposed. On eBay, do not publish an email address or PayPal details in a listing or other public area, and keep transaction messages and checkout on eBay. In PayPal, use Search Privacy to limit how people find your account and adjust business contact visibility in your Seller Profile; these controls do not guarantee that a buyer will not see information connected with a payment.
First identify where the information is visible
eBay’s rules about publishing contact and payment details are different from PayPal’s controls for account discovery and Seller Profile visibility. Choose the section that matches the problem: a public listing or profile, a PayPal search result, or information shown in connection with a transaction.
| Where the details appear | What to do | What the control does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| An eBay listing or other public eBay area | Remove the email address and payment details; use eBay messages and checkout. | eBay lists exceptions to its general restriction, so the policy is not exceptionless. |
| PayPal search results | Review and turn off the relevant Search Privacy controls. | This does not stop someone who already knows an email address or phone number from sending money, or someone from using a QR code. |
| PayPal Seller Profile | Manage the business contact fields shown in the Seller Profile Dashboard. | Profile visibility controls do not establish what a buyer may see in a payment or receipt. |
Hide contact and PayPal details on eBay
eBay’s contact information policy generally prohibits publishing or displaying contact information on the site. It names email addresses, payment information, and bank details, and applies to listings, listing images, profile and storefront pages, forums, and other public areas. The policy says: “Publishing or displaying contact information in a listing without the permission of eBay, or except as required by law, is not allowed.” It also notes exceptions, so check the policy for the relevant category or circumstance.
Remove details from public content
- Do not put an email address or PayPal details in listing text, photos, a profile, or a storefront page.
- If the details are already visible, edit or remove the content. If you cannot remove it, use eBay’s help or reporting route to ask the platform to review it.
eBay says enforcement can include removal of content and account action. Its separate policy on offers to buy or sell outside eBay says buyers and sellers cannot share or request direct contact details or payment information before completing an eBay sale. Use eBay messages to communicate and eBay checkout to pay. Moving a purchase off-platform can make it ineligible for eBay protection programs.

Limit whether people can find you through PayPal search
PayPal’s Search Privacy controls determine whether other users can find your account through PayPal search using profile information, a PayPal.Me link, or payment requests. To review them, open Profile → Data and privacy → Search privacy, then switch off the controls you do not want. PayPal says the newer settings took effect September 5, 2023; that date describes their rollout, not a deadline.
Turning off all Search Privacy controls removes search confirmation and profile or photo visibility in search results. It does not block every route to your account: someone who already knows your email address or phone number can still send you money, and a QR code can still be used. Treat this as a limit on discoverability, not as a way to hide payment identifiers from someone who already has them. Menu labels and availability may vary by account or region.

Hide business contact fields in a PayPal Seller Profile
PayPal’s Seller Profile help information says sellers can control whether the business phone number, email address, or location appears in the Seller Profile Dashboard. The profile can be found by username or business name. Review those visibility options in the dashboard and hide the fields you do not want displayed there.
This is a profile setting, not a promise that contact details are concealed in a transaction. The available Seller Profile guidance does not establish what a buyer sees on a payment screen or receipt, so do not assume that hiding a profile field also hides it from someone you pay or charge.

If the issue is another marketplace
Do not assume eBay or PayPal settings apply to another service. For example, Etsy’s guidance on another member’s personal information says not to post another member’s personal details publicly and provides a reporting route for listings or shops containing private information. Check the specific marketplace’s policy and account settings.
