A Boston Dynamics robot dog named Zeus was at SpaceX’s Boca Chica, Texas, test site to help inspect the area after Starship SN10 exploded. The robot was photographed on March 4, 2021, as crews recovered rocket parts and cleaned up. Reports described inspection of potentially unsafe areas, but did not establish what sensors Zeus carried or whether it was autonomous during that walk.
What happened to Starship SN10?
On March 3, 2021, SpaceX’s Starship SN10 completed a landing attempt at its Boca Chica test site. The vehicle exploded minutes later. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted “RIP SN10, honorable discharge” the next day, as reported by Science Times.
On March 4, photographer Trevor Mahlmann photographed Zeus at the site while crews recovered debris and cleaned up. Mahlmann captioned his post “Hi Zeus!!! (Round 2),” according to Ars Technica and Futurism. The headline “There’s a Robodog Walking Around the Site of the SpaceX Starship Explosion” was published by Futurism on March 4, 2021.
Why was a robot dog inspecting the site?
Zeus gave SpaceX a way to examine a test area where debris or other hazards could make it risky to send people first. Contemporaneous reporting described the robot’s role as inspecting test areas or places unsafe for people and checking for gas leaks or other hazards. In that setting, a mobile robot can gather information while crews remain focused on recovery and cleanup.

- Control Near or Far: Whether kids are racing it across the living room or guiding it in the backyard, they’re always in charge. The 2.4GHz remote works from up to 98 feet away, while simple hand gestures let them direct their pup up close—so play never gets boring.
- Safe Fun in Anywhere: This clever pup knows when something’s in the way. Thanks to obstacle-avoidance sensors, it smoothly avoids walls and furniture. Perfect for small apartments, bedrooms, or any indoor play space where kids can enjoy worry-free fun.
That is the reported purpose, not proof that Zeus detected a leak or any specific hazard during this visit. The reports do not give its sensor readings, exact payload, or a measured comparison with a human inspector.
What could Zeus do—and what is not known about this walk?
Boston Dynamics’ current Spot product information describes a quadruped platform for inspection and remote investigation, with applications involving visual and thermal checks, acoustic leak detection, perimeter monitoring, and hazard response. Those capabilities help explain why a robot dog can be useful at an industrial test site: it can move through uneven surroundings and carry sensing equipment into places where a person may face added exposure.

Spot’s present-day capabilities do not establish the configuration or operation of Zeus in 2021. The published accounts do not say whether Zeus was teleoperated or autonomous during the photographed walk, what instruments it carried, or whether it measured methane. They also provide no measured inspection-speed or safety comparison against people.
Was the explosion caused by a landing-leg failure?
That was speculation, not a confirmed finding in the contemporaneous coverage. Science Times reported that SpaceX had not revealed the cause when its article was published and framed landing-leg failure as a belief. The available reports therefore do not support stating a definitive cause for the SN10 explosion.
