Damn Small Linux (DSL) 2024 is a compact Linux distribution designed for low-spec x86 computers. It may be worth trying on an older PC, but it is not a guaranteed fix: the project’s pages do not specify minimum hardware requirements or establish how DSL performs on any particular machine. Likewise, Windows 11’s published compatibility requirements explain why some older PCs are ineligible, but they do not prove that DSL will be faster or more capable on them.

What Damn Small Linux 2024 is

DSL 2024 is based on antiX 23 i386 and is intended for low-spec x86 computers. The project’s goal is to fit a usable desktop system into an image no larger than 700 MB. That is a stated image-size target, not a measurement of the installed system or a performance result. The 2024 project is not the original 50 MB DSL build. Damn Small Linux project overview

Included desktop and applications

The project lists Fluxbox and JWM window managers, plus Firefox ESR, NetSurf, Dillo and Links2 browsers. Other listed applications include AbiWord and Gnumeric for office work, Sylpheed for email, Zathura for documents, MPV and XMMS for media, and mtPaint for images. Whether these tools suit you depends on the websites, files and peripherals you need to use.

To meet its image-size goal, the project says it reduced some language support and left out source code, man pages and documentation. It provides a download script to restore missing files. DSL has apt enabled, but its maintainer cautions that DSL is a reductive derivative and that some antiX features may be missing or broken. These details matter if you expect the same completeness or behavior as a full-featured distribution.

What the Windows 11 comparison does—and does not—show

Microsoft lists a compatible processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with a WDDM 2.0 driver among Windows 11’s minimum requirements. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.

Those requirements explain why some older computers do not qualify for Windows 11. They do not establish that Windows 11 is “bloated” by a technical measurement, or that DSL will run faster, be safer, or support more of your needs. No controlled, same-computer DSL-versus-Windows 11 benchmark is established by the available sources. Treat DSL as an alternative to test on the actual PC, not as a proven performance upgrade.

Release status and compatibility limits

The official DSL download page labels the listed release a release candidate. It identifies rc7 as the latest posted version and dates it June 8, 2024. The page offers a CD-ROM ISO and an LZ4 lower-compression ISO; the project suggests the LZ4 image for virtual machines or UNetbootin. The download directory lists rc7 files and a current.lz4.iso entry. Check the DSL 2024 download page and download directory for the latest listing and checksum before using an image, since those listings can change.

The download page describes compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit systems, but that does not guarantee support for every old processor, graphics device, network adapter or firmware setup. The project pages do not provide a complete hardware compatibility matrix or minimum hardware specification. You will need to check whether your particular machine boots the image and whether its hardware and applications work as needed.

How to try DSL from a USB drive

  1. Check USB boot support. Consult your computer’s firmware or BIOS settings and documentation. The DSL USB installation guide warns that very old BIOS versions may not support booting from USB.
  2. Back up the USB drive. Writing installation media may erase its contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
  3. Choose an image for your setup. The official page lists a CD-ROM ISO and an LZ4 lower-compression ISO, with the latter suggested for virtual machines or UNetbootin. Follow the current project instructions for the image you choose.
  4. Boot and check your real workload. Confirm that the computer starts DSL and test the network connection, display, peripherals and applications you rely on before deciding whether to install or keep using it.

The 2024 release page does not state a required USB capacity; do not treat older capacity guidance in the wiki as a confirmed requirement for this release.

When DSL 2024 may be worth trying

  • Your PC is an older x86 machine: DSL is explicitly aimed at low-spec x86 computers, making it a candidate to test if Windows 11 eligibility is a barrier.
  • Your needs match the included software: Its listed browser, office, email and media tools may cover basic tasks, but verify the sites and files you use rather than assuming compatibility.
  • You can test the hardware first: USB boot support and working graphics, networking and peripherals are machine-specific; the project does not promise that every old computer will work.
  • You need a stable release or comprehensive support: The listed build is marked as a release candidate, and the project notes that some antiX features may be missing or broken. Consider those limits before relying on it for essential work.
